Last week, 19 of us traveled from ND to KU for our first NSF ERC EARTH (Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub) Annual Meeting. I forgot to get an ND-team pic - oops. Here is Emmanuel Bonsu Afreh and I outside of the charter bus. Emmanuel is just beginning his PhD research on the EARTH project.

Research & development expenditures spanning all campuses at The University of Kansas increased to $546.1 million in fiscal year 2024, surpassing the half-billion-dollar mark for the first time in university history. This record high represents a 17% increase year over year and the ninth consecutive year of research growth for the university. Read about how the reverberations of that growth extend far beyond KU to benefit people throughout the Sunflower State and beyond. https://rockcha.lk/iris-25

NSF ERC EARTH Industry Partner Researcher, Abby Harders, featured by the University of Kansas Office of Research for her recent publication!! Read more about how her research yields eco-friendly ways to separate and recycle refrigerants that are tied to our current climate crisis. https://lnkd.in/gUdt6iY9
An engineer who started her career with a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded undergraduate research experience co-developed a way to recycle refrigerants that contribute to the climate crisis. Abby Harders and Mark Shiflett, engineering professor at The University of Kansas, published their work in a new journal article. Harders was a student at Bethel College in central Kansas when she had the opportunity to spend a summer working in Shiflett's lab thanks to the Research Experience for Undergraduates program that provides students with a federally-funded stipend, summer on-campus housing and meal plan. Harders returned to KU to complete her doctorate degree and now works for Icorium Engineering Company, a Lawrence-based startup. Read more about how research funding jump-starts careers, retains workers in Kansas, and helps solve problems of global importance. https://lnkd.in/gR-YbDdH

NSF ERC EARTH Student Council Leadership Member from core partner University of South Dakota, Blessing Ishola, MS, honored with prestigious American Chemical Society Leadership Award. This award recognizes young leaders in Chemistry ?? Congratulations, Blessing! ??
Doctoral Student at the University of South Dakota|Synthetic Organic Chemist|Organofluorine Chemist|Technology Readiness Accelerated Centre (TRAC) Fellow|Science Communication Fellow|
I am excited to announce that I have received the prestigious American Chemical Society Leadership Award. This honor recognizes young leaders in the field of chemistry who are making significant contributions, and I am incredibly grateful for this recognition. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the ACS Leadership Institute from January 31st to February 2nd, 2025. The experience was transformative. One of the highlights was participating in a dynamic workshop titled "Collaborating Across Boundaries," where I learned the core components of finding common grounds to drive collaborations across organizational boundaries, how to conduct meaningful "value analyses" for and all essential components for a successful collaboration. Engaging with current ACS leaders such as Dorothy Phillips, Carolyn Ribes, Peter Dorhout, Albert Horvath, Amalene Cooper-Morgan, Ph.D., LaTrease Garrison, Mary Carroll, Lana M. Nitti, and Laurel A. Royer, among others provided me with invaluable insights that will undoubtedly help enhance my leadership skills and shape my career path. The discussions about the future of the American Chemical Society, especially as we approach its 150th anniversary, were incredibly inspiring. Connecting with other passionate student leaders further motivated me to drive positive change within the chemical sciences community. I feel more empowered than ever to make a difference and expand my professional network. A huge thank you to the American Chemical Society Younger Chemists Committee, Taylor Keller, Safia Jilani, all the ACS leaders I cannot mention in this post, the University of South Dakota Chemistry Department, and my advisor, Dr. Haoran Sun, for their unwavering support. I am excited to apply what I have learned and continue making a meaningful impact in our field. Here’s to the journey ahead! #ACSLLeadershipAward #Chemistry #Leadership #Networking #ACSCommunity
