Compositions by Women You Should Know ?? ?? ?? Vieille Prière Bouddhique by Lili Boulanger Lili Boulanger (1893–1918) was a groundbreaking French composer whose music is filled with deep emotion and rich colors. She was the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome, but her career was tragically short due to illness. Even so, she left behind a powerful legacy of music that blends impressionistic beauty with profound expression. Vieille Prière Bouddhique (Ancient Buddhist Prayer), written in 1917, is one of her final works. Scored for tenor, choir, and orchestra, it sets a Buddhist prayer for peace and enlightenment, embracing a sense of calm and universality. The music shimmers with lush harmonies and a meditative atmosphere, showing Boulanger’s fascination with spirituality in her last years. It’s a moving and reflective piece, capturing both serenity and a deep emotional core. The early days of the Trump administration’s return to office saw a flurry of executive orders dramatically changing federal policy related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. These orders signaled a seismic shift – long-standing affirmative action requirements were revoked, federal diversity initiatives dismantled, and private-sector DEI efforts came under new scrutiny... Compositions By Women You Should Know?? ?? Lingua Tonga by Shruthi Rajasekar(@shruthimusic) Shruthi Rajasekar is an Associate of the Royal Northern College of Music (ARNCM) and a Jerome Hill Artist Fellow. Her compositions have won numerous honors, including the KHORIKOS ORTUS International Award, the Composers Guild of New Jersey Award, and the Global Women in Music Award from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights & Donne in Musica Adkins Chiti Foundation. BBC Music Magazine named Shruthi a 2020 Rising Star. Shruthi's diverse output reflects her diasporic South Asian identity, her dual performance background in Carnatic (South Indian classical) and Western classical musics, and her belief in the importance of communal gathering and civic engagement. Lingua Tonga is a joyful homage to the rich, multihued music of the Hindi film industry, often known as Bollywood. Throughout this piece, Rajasekar evokes elements of Hindi film music, such as their style of ornamentation, common patterns of swaras (notes), and the rapid orchestral gestures found in Indian film BGM (background music). ?? Compositions By Women You Should Know ?? Mélanie Hélène Bonis, known as Mel Bonis, was a French composer whose works spanned the late Romantic and early 20th-century periods. Though her musical gifts were not encouraged at first, her parents eventually allowed her to study at the Paris Conservatoire with Cesar Franck and alongside Claude Debussy. In order to have her work taken more seriously, she became known as Mel Bonis to make her gender less obvious. Over her life, she composed extensively, producing over 300 works, including piano pieces, chamber music, choral works, and orchestral compositions. But it was only after leaving her arranged marriage that she managed to publish some of her compositions. Bonis’ music blends lyrical expressiveness with rich harmonies and elegant structures, often drawing inspiration from Impressionism and Romanticism. "Adoro Te" is a stunningly gorgeous setting of a medieval prayer. Though not for liturgical use, this piece beautifully represents the private prayer and adoration of the poem.
