What is Behind the Decision to Pull Horses into a Frame? Learning to ride well, from the horse's perspective, requires a deep dive into the how the process can work, or not, from their perspective. The human instinct, born out of fear or a desire to control, to pull on a horse's face can only be diminished by education, empathy, patience and the desire to preserve our horses' physical, mental and emotional well being. The term self carriage might seem quite simple, but is, in fact, complex in the elements that need to be in place for it to be achieved. If a horse is being pulled into a frame - NOT self carriage If a horse is leaning on the bit/bridle - NOT self carriage Learning to resist the embedded culture to use gadgets, harsher bits, or any other suggestion, the impact of which is rarely understood by the user, is our responsibility as owners and equine professionals. Your One-Stop Resource on Tried-and-Tested, Evidence-Based Information About Horses.
关于我们
Like you, perhaps, my involvement with horses is a life-long story. I have loved horses ever since I can remember. Horse life for most of us, is a journey of highs and lows – excitement and elation when things are going well – and disappointment and heartache when injuries happen – or frustration when you feel something’s not quite right but you just can’t get to the root of it. Some years ago, I realized that most of my frustration stemmed from a sense of helplessness – I relied completely on the advice of professionals who very often gave me conflicting advice – and I just didn’t know enough so that I could be a proper advocate for my horse. I decided I would try to become the best horse owner I could be and along the way, I realized that other people were having similar experiences to me. So, on behalf of myself and others like me, I started Equitopia with the goal of creating a resource that I wish I had access to years ago. I reached out to people with relevant knowledge and experience who could educate me. I wanted to get past opinions and really find tried and tested evidence-based information that would be good for me and my horses.

Behind the Vertical and Hyperflexion - Why Do We Need to Understand? As more and more people are beginning to question our role in the care, welfare and training of horses from a welfare perspective, it is important that we, as owners, trainers and equine professionals, have an understanding of the physical, mental and emotional components of a healthy development program. When it comes to the physical aspect, the importance of understanding how our actions, in the name of training, can either support or damage our horse's wellbeing is of paramount importance. As the debate on horse welfare continues, the pervasive use of forced frames of Behind the Vertical or Hyperflexion continues to be defended by many. What is the big deal, some ask? Well, in December's webinar we are going to dive into this topic in an effort to raise awareness and encourage more elevated discussions on the impact of these forced frames on the physical, mental and emotional well being of our horses. Presented by France based Equine Veterinarian and Welfare advocate, Dr. Eva Van Avermaet, this will be a webinar not to be missed! Horse Behavior - The Key to Communication and Verification While the horse world is beginning to understand that horse behavior is an essential part of the training equation, how do we interpret it accurately? We a lot of trainers making statements about behavioral reactions that horses are having that are not in line with the abundance of research and evidence available on the topic. Many of the actions we see being taken involve behavior suppression as opposed to addressing the underlying reasons for the behavior in the first place. These "training" methods can seem magical in that they can seem to instantly (minutes, hours, a day) to "fix" the issue being experienced the handler/rider/trainer. If you are having some kind of issue with your horse, the first thing to understand is why is the horse behaving this way. Finding the solution is usually a journey and takes time, including understanding what is happening from the horse's perspective in relation to their nature and their learning process. If this something that you need more information on, we have several webinars and an online course that expand on these basics and can guide better communication and understanding on how to address behavior issues. Personal Development - How Your and Your Horse's Emotions Impact Outcomes Horses are incredibly intuitive animals, often mirroring the emotions of the humans they interact with. This inter-relationship can be a powerful force for connection or a source of miscommunication, depending on how we manage our emotions. When we bring stress, frustration, or anxiety into our interactions, horses pick up on those feelings, potentially leading to tension or confusion. On the other hand, a calm, centered presence fosters trust, safety, and cooperation. This is why understanding and regulating our emotions is so important—not just for better decision-making but for building a stronger bond with our horses. Emotional intelligence isn’t just about controlling how we feel; it’s about recognizing emotions in ourselves and others, responding thoughtfully, and staying present. Cultivating these skills helps create a positive, harmonious environment where both horse and human can thrive. If you are ready to learn about some practical tools to improve your self-awareness and emotional regulation, and discover how these skills can transform your relationship with your horse, then we have the support you need. In this ten class course, presented by our highly credentialed and experienced team from Finland, you can become empowered in directing your relationship, not only with your horse, but with other people in your world. Defining Skilled Riding: A Whole Horse, Whole Rider Approach What does it truly mean to be a skilled rider? From the horse’s perspective, skill is not just about technical mastery but also empathy, understanding, and a commitment to their welfare. Horses are generous partners, and their welfare must surely remain central in all training and riding. Should a skilled rider prioritize the horse’s physical and emotional health, understanding how biomechanics, balance, and proper aids affect the horse’s body and mind? Poor practices—like ignoring subtle signs of discomfort or misusing training techniques—can lead to unnecessary tension and even long-term harm. For the horse to perform optimally, the rider must develop self-awareness, core strength, and refined communication. A balanced, mindful rider enables a horse to move freely and without resistance, fostering trust and connection. The whole horse/whole rider philosophy ensures training methods align with the horse’s natural biomechanics and mental capacity. By committing to continuous learning and ethical practices, we can redefine skilled riding to mean not just mastery of technique but a deep partnership grounded in respect and care. Expanding on this topic in great detail, our course on defining skilled riding delves into these vital topics, emphasizing a whole horse/whole rider approach to achieve the best in performance and well-being. Presented by some of our top educators, Internationally recognized for their credentials, experience and dedication to horse welfare, this course can help in defining the specific goals you need in order to balance the technical aspects of riding with horse and rider well being: https://lnkd.in/dCNct8c2 #skilledrider #horseperspective #technical #welfare #horse #rider #connected #onlineeducation #evidence #research #equitopia

Why is a Supple Back an Essential Part of Self Carriage? Self-carriage is the hallmark of good classical German horse training. It reflects the horse’s ability to move in balance, harmony, and lightness without relying on the rider for support. Our own lead trainer, Dr. Gerd Heuschmann follows the teaching of one of the old masters, Gustav Steinbrecht, who emphasizes the importance of ethical, biomechanically correct methods to achieve this. Riding a horse behind the vertical compromises self-carriage and harms the horse. As Dr. Heuschmann explains in one of his books, Tug of War, forcing the horse’s head down creates tension, restricts the airflow, and negatively impacts the horse’s movement. A horse behind the vertical cannot engage its back properly, leading to stiffness and a lack of true impulsion. A supple back is essential for self-carriage. Steinbrecht, in his foundational text The Gymnasium of the Horse, stresses that only a relaxed, elastic back allows the hindquarters to engage fully and carry weight, promoting balance and freedom of movement. Starting young horses correctly lays the foundation for lifelong soundness. Dr. Heuschmann always warns against rushing young horses into forced frames, as it can cause physical and mental harm. Instead, patient training builds strength, flexibility, and trust, ensuring the horse develops naturally into self-carriage. If this is something that is appealing and you want to learn more, we are honored to have several courses and webinars presented by Dr. Heuschmann. Saddle Fit - Vital For Welfare and Performance Saddle fit is essential for the welfare of both horse and rider, directly influencing comfort, performance, and health. Saddle trees, commonly labeled as narrow, medium, or wide, vary significantly between manufacturers. This inconsistency means not all brands can accommodate every horse’s unique conformation. However, saddle fit doesn’t exist in isolation. The horse's biomechanics, posture, fitness, and freedom from injury directly affect how the saddle performs. Similarly, the rider’s balance, posture, and skill level influence saddle stability. Factors like hoof balance and proper conditioning are also vital, as a poorly prepared or asymmetrical horse compromises the saddle’s efficacy A poorly fitting saddle can cause discomfort, restrict movement, and lead to long-term health issues for the horse. Regular checks and professional advice are key to ensuring the saddle functions as intended. ?? Setting the Stage for Harmonious Riding ?? Being a good rider starts with connection and understanding. But how do we truly unlock the potential of our horses while ensuring their well-being? Making the commitment to learning how to prepare our horses for ridden work is an essential part of our responsibility in terms of their welfare. The basics of all disciplines starts with self carriage. Sadly, the word self carriage and the reality of self carriage are frequently not aligned. Recognizing self carriage from a biomechanical perspective is a necessary prerequisite for riding or training any horse. What does self carriage look like? What elements tell you whether or not a horse is in balance? What do you look for to tell you where and how they might be out of balance? What can you do about it? We reached out to several compassionate, knowledgeable and highly qualified trainers on this topic, including Netherlands based Dr. Karin Leibbrandt. In this course that we put together with her, we aim to guide both owners and professionals on how to navigate and be confident in this topic. Currently on sale at a 50% discount, this could be one of the best investments for you and your horse on the road to harmonious and compassionate riding.
