SAE OBD Symposium in Porto - Thursday 13th March Equipment and Tool Institute (ETI)s Greg Potter and Winston Lee attended this year’s SAE International OBD Symposium in Porto. With the final day on the Thursday, the format continued with the list of great speakers and valuable information. The days main points were many and varied but for us the key ones included:- Tightening Emissions & Durability Standards CARB’s heavy-duty push (Omnibus Amendments, Off-Road Tier 5) and China’s drive for full OBD in ZEVs underscore the global momentum toward stricter regulations. Advanced Diagnostics & Predictive Maintenance AI-driven algorithms, digital twins, and remote diagnostic platforms are reshaping the detection and resolution of faults, improving uptime and compliance. Collaborative Roundtables & Unified Standards Discussions emphasised the need for consistent global data protocols (J1979-2, UDS) and robust cybersecurity as vehicles become more connected and reliant on software updates. Off-Road & Specialty Vehicle Focus Off-highway engines and motorcycles face unique OBD challenges and are the next frontier for expanding emissions monitoring requirements. Zero Trust & Cybersecurity With vehicles increasingly connected to cloud and infrastructure, a zero-trust approach highlights the importance of continuous authorisation and security layers. The final day concluded with forward-looking strategies on heavy-duty emissions standards, zero-emission vehicles, advanced diagnostics, and the critical importance of cybersecurity in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape. Each session reinforced the industry-wide move toward harmonised regulations, predictive technologies, and innovative data-driven solutions to ensure cleaner, more reliable mobility. We hope that everyone got home safe and look forward to meeting you all again soon.

SAE OBD Symposium in Porto - Tuesday 11th March Equipment and Tool Institute (ETI)s Greg Potter and Winston Lee are attending this years SAE International OBD Symposium in Porto. A very intense day of technical updates, conformity and compliance updates as well as new concepts in diagnosis made for a very full day of information from around the globe. Throughout the day, networking remained a crucial feature, allowing attendees to connect with the key players shaping the future of OBD and emissions control. From regulatory bodies to engineering consultancies, the day provided a valuable forum to share best practices and stay ahead of the curve on vehicle monitoring and compliance requirements. Overview of Day 1 Global Regulatory Convergence As regions advance emissions and battery regulations (Euro 7, OBFCM, GTR 22, etc.), the industry faces both compliance challenges and opportunities for standardisation. Rising Role of AI From anomaly detection in OBD systems to predictive maintenance, AI is quickly becoming a critical tool for improving reliability and reducing emissions. Software Management & Cybersecurity R155/R156 regulations underscore the importance of tracking and securing vehicle software, ensuring safe updates and compliance over the vehicle’s lifespan. Cost of Fragmented Standards Multiple certification pathways and varying national rules drive up compliance costs, making a strong case for further harmonisation. Overall, the day highlighted both the complexity and the promise of upcoming automotive regulations—with a clear theme of leveraging technology to ensure vehicles remain cleaner, safer, and more robust in the face of global environmental challenges.

The intersection of industry... SAE and ETI. Vehicle technology needs intertwined with the needs of the aftermarket repair industry.
Greg Potter, CTO of Equipment and Tool Institute (ETI) Attended this year’s SAE International Government Industry Meeting in January. The SAE International Government Industry Meeting is an annual forum bringing together leaders from government agencies, automotive and commercial-vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, and policy organisations. Its aim is to address current and upcoming regulations, public policy, and technology trends in the mobility sector. The government and associated regulators included: U.S. Department of Transportation US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) US DOE NTSB Training Center National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA California Air Resources Board Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) IIHSE-International Institute of Health Safety Environment The panel discussions were interesting as well as thought provoking in their content. Areas such as balancing innovation speed with regulatory oversight, creating equitable access to new mobility modes (including rural and underserved urban areas) as well as the all-important subject of cybersecurity considerations for connected vehicles were discussing in various sessions. The 2025 SAE International Government/Industry Meeting underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration among OEMs, suppliers, regulators, and policymakers to shape the future of mobility. Key takeaways included the pressing need for unified regulatory frameworks around automation and electrification, enhanced safety standards to match rapidly evolving technologies, and stronger infrastructure investment strategies. Looking ahead, participants emphasis was clearly on the critical role that government-industry coordination will play in meeting both environmental and safety objectives while fostering innovation.
