Emerging?technology pathways may help address?hard-to-abate industrial sectors that cannot be highly electrified. Experts at EPRI are investigating?the potential impacts those pathways may have upon #electric and gas utility loads through the project?Industrial Decarbonization Beyond Electrification: Enabling Integrated Decarbonization Pathways. The vision for this project is to improve coordination and integration of industry and energy company net-zero strategies, particularly as they relate to sector coupling opportunities for low-carbon fuels and CO2 management. This project builds upon expertise developed in the Low Carbon Resources Initiative and the global momentum of EPRI’s partnership with the World Economic Forum’s Transitioning Industrial Clusters Toward Net Zero initiative, and will leverage knowledge and #resources from across EPRI’s electrification, nuclear, carbon capture, and long duration #energy storage teams. As a founding member, Maria Pope, CEO of Portland General Electric, highlighted the value of the DCFLex (https://lnkd.in/eW7RUJT2) initiative during her remarks at CERAWeek. EPRI launched DCFlex to help balance the needs of power systems with the energy requirements of large loads, such as data centers. This global initiative brings together stakeholders in the data center, technology, utility, and research communities to explore how data centers could become grid assets rather than a burden on the energy system.

Designing a new nuclear reactor is a challenging task requiring careful thought into how long-term plant maintenance will be accomplished. A comprehensive maintenance technical basis must be built for all systems and component groups to determine equipment layout, maintenance performance, access needs, and overall maintenance requirements.?Rolls-Royce SMR?leveraged robust industry data from EPRI’s Preventative Maintenance Basis Database (PMBD) which is informed by decades of commercial light water plant operations. As a result, they saved approximately 3,000 hours using the PMBD data to aid in developing the maintenance technical basis for their new design. This also allowed them to develop a detailed maintenance schedule much earlier in the design life cycle than typically is possible for a new plant. They received an EPRI Tech Transfer Award for this work. At this week's EPRI Transmission & Substations Task Force Meeting,?EPRI facilitated drone test flights at our Charlotte lab. The researchers utilize these labs to evaluate new technologies as well as perform forensic studies and tests on existing assets. The results of an EPRI lab or field test are designed to help with understanding the performance of new and existing technologies, enabling better decision making. ??
