Energy security -- Reliability -- Affordability These priorities are shared across many countries and energy companies as the world faces new opportunities for growth while balancing clean energy targets. More than 90% of South Korea’s energy relies on imports from other countries. A large portion of the country’s financial economy relies on the exports of goods. There is a direct link between the country’s energy use and its financial strength. Trade, collaboration, and innovation are vital to the country’s success. This week, I had the opportunity to meet with leaders in power generation across South Korea.?We discussed: * The need for new global supply chains for fuels ** How and when low-carbon fuels can be used in existing assets *** When new technologies could become commercially viable During my trip, I visited our partners at the KEPRI research labs to see firsthand their approach to innovation. From artificial intelligence to combustion turbine design, their experts are hard at work and their progress is exciting and inspiring. Despite unique regional conditions, there are many common needs and opportunities. EPRI is expanding its data center flexibility demonstration project outside the U.S. — and has already signed on new European participants. The project, known as DCFlex, explores how data centers can be leveraged as flexibility assets for the grid. First?launched in October 2024?with around 15 utility companies, independent power producers, and data center operators, it now counts nearly 40 participants, including Dominion Energy, ERCOT, PJM Interconnection, Google, Microsoft, and NVIDIA. The latest joiners are the French transmission system operator Réseau de Transport d'électricité, the French equipment supplier, the Dutch financial services company ING, and the Greek utility PPC S.A. https://lnkd.in/ekwkA-Gj

A study by EPRI and PNNL, finding highlights the increasing risk of power outages in the U.S. due to hurricanes. Using a robust machine learning model, researchers found that hurricane-induced power outage risk is expected to rise significantly by the end of the century, with some states facing increases of 60% or more. These findings are essential for guiding future investment and mitigation plans to better prepare for and manage outage risks. ??
