???????????????????? ????????????’?? ???????????? ???????????????? ?????? ?? ?????????????? ???????????? Europe is leading the way in citizen-driven energy transformation. Through new projects like ENPOWER, #CreteValley, and #EUDream, Europeans are exploring new ways to take charge of their energy use. These EU-funded projects are designed to empower local communities to produce and manage clean energy, aiming for an inclusive, resilient energy transition. In the newest #EPRICurrent podcast episode (available here), host Bill Florence speaks with Eleni Kanellou, Dr Julia Blanke and Mário Teixeira Couto about their work in energy democratization and understanding what may motivate and influence private citizens to better align and optimize their energy consumption with the needs of the grid and overall energy system. By combining advanced tech with human behavior models and citizen engagement, these European projects work to create tools that are user-friendly and responsive to real community needs. Beyond innovation, the projects intend to prioritize trust and data privacy, while addressing the essential need for data-sharing in developing smart energy tools. EPRI and its European partners are working across diverse pilot sites to implement these solutions, bringing valuable lessons to other parts of the world aiming to make their energy systems more sustainable. #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #EnergyDemocracy #EnergyCommunities #RenewableEnergy #Collaboration #EnergyCitizen

Appalachian Power?has?announced plans to pursue the use of small modular reactors (SMRs) to deliver carbon-free, reliable power to Virginia. EPRI’s Advanced Nuclear Technology team is pleased to have collaborated with the company in its assessment process as it drew on EPRI’s guidance in new nuclear plant development. Appalachian Power will work closely with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, state and local agencies, and other stakeholders to gather feedback and advance the planning process for a potential location identified in Campbell County, Virginia. After attending 25 events at COP29, the EPRI team, Neil Wilmshurst, Zaid al-Ansari, and Gowtham Pandian, have departed Baku, rich in new connections and accomplishments. While planned as the “Finance COP,” the team reflected a true sense of urgency and pragmatism among participants in getting things done. This year has seen a continuation of extreme weather events across the globe and ongoing international discussion about the growing demand for the #electricity needed to power #AI. Mixed in is the fact that for many developing countries, the energy transition is actually about simply accessing energy on a compressed timeline, while for more developed nations the transition is about the technology needed to meet net-zero goals. With representatives of both groups in common meetings, the conversations are building a greater understanding that action must be taken to benefit both, and taken soon. EPRI is proud to contribute the RD&D needed to support the transition at any phase and to continue building deliberate collaborations to meet these needs worldwide. We will continue these conversations throughout 2025 and see you at COP30 in Brazil!

EPRI and Tennessee Valley Authority just completed the world's largest renewable diesel-powered combustion turbine demonstration at TVA's Johnsonville site in Tennessee! This innovative test on a 76-megawatt dual-fuel unit shows that renewable diesel can slash greenhouse gas emissions by up to 75% compared to conventional diesel, while still delivering reliable, on-demand power. This milestone highlights the potential of low-carbon fuels to drive the energy transition. It also underscores TVA and EPRI's commitments to developing clean energy technologies that support a sustainable and reliable power supply for our growing economy. The successful demonstration could have significant implications for peaking units, which are smaller power plants that can quickly ramp up or down to ensure grid reliability. This flexibility is important for balancing intermittent renewable resources like wind and solar. Read the news release here: https://lnkd.in/e64sNyu2 Stay tuned for more details as EPRI publishes a comprehensive report on this successful demonstration! #CleanEnergy #RenewableDiesel #Innovation

Meet?Jason Litten. Jason is a lab engineer at EPRI's T&D lab in Charlotte, NC. Jason works on fabrication of test setups to failure analysis of utility components to high voltage/current testing. "The work changes everyday to adjust for member's needs. That what keeps it fun and rewarding. For example, I get to travel to Colombia to educate their linemen on techniques that we've been successful in sealing SF6 leaks." ?? Participating in Saturday’s U.S. Department of State-hosted event at #COP29 was truly a highlight of the eventful time here in Baku. Three projects supporting the Department of State’s ???????????????????????? ???????????????????????????? ?????? ?????? ?????????????????????? ?????? ???? ?????????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ???????????????????? (FIRST) program were announced at the event – one being Project Phoenix, in which EPRI’s Advanced Nuclear Technology team is playing a key role. The project involves conducting assessment for the conversion of Ukraine’s existing coal plants to nuclear power generation with small modular reactor technology. I look forward to seeing the results of the analysis conducted through Project Phoenix and the progress made through all FIRST program projects.? ? This important work is a vital step forward in deploying technologies at scale while utilizing existing infrastructure and retraining the region’s workforce. The #SMR-focused work in Ukraine can be part of a greater, global effort to advance commercial deployment efforts more quickly and effectively than only a few nations working to get to Nth of a kind. We heard this message woven throughout the past days here, and it’s a concept we’re sure to be discussing in earnest and much greater detail following our time in Azerbaijan.?? ? I am grateful to have participated in Saturday’s event with Ukrainian Minister of Energy German Galushchenko,?Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Acting Assistant Secretary of Nuclear Energy Dr. Michael Goff, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Azerbaijan H.E. Yuriy Husyef, and Director of Argonne National Laboratory Dr. Paul K. Kearns. Personally, I am proud to support EPRI’s role in contributing nuclear research and expertise to help Ukraine reach its energy goals.
