Calling all EV Drivers! Planning a road trip in Ireland over the bank holiday? Whether you’re heading way up north or to the sunny southeast, we’ve put together these seven tips to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. ??
1?? Plan Your Route & Charging Stops in Advance
Ireland’s EV charging network is growing, but not every town has fast chargers. Plot your route and download the ePower app here: www.epower.ie.
2?? Not all charge times are created equal!
Fast chargers (50 kW+): Best for quick top-ups (30-45 mins).
Standard chargers (22 kW or less): Better for overnight or long stops.
Home charging: Fully charge before you hit the road!
3?? Avoid Peak Charging Times
Long weekends mean more traffic, which means more EV’s on the road. Try to charge:
Early in the morning or late at night to avoid queues.
At hotels, car parks chargers instead of busy motorway stations, where possible.
4?? Pack the essentials!
RFID cards for the chargers that don’t currently support app payments.
Backup charging cables—Type 2 and granny cables for emergencies.
Power bank for your phone—essential for using apps and maps and playlists!!
5?? Efficiency is everything…
Drive using regenerative braking where possible.
Stick to moderate speeds on motorways (110 km/h uses battery power faster).
Pre-condition your car while plugged in to save battery.
6?? Have a Backup Plan
Some chargers may be occupied or out of service. Identify alternative charging spots along your route and have a plan B in case of delays.
7?? Enjoy the Journey!
EV road trips are quieter, smoother, and more eco-friendly. Take advantage of scenic routes, charge at locations with nice cafes or attractions, and enjoy exploring Ireland at a relaxed pace.
Safe travels, happy charging and Happy St Patrick’s Day!! ?????
