As part of EHF's recent statewide survey on #diabetes in Texas, we asked Texans what ideas would be effective for diabetes prevention. Their answers? Increased affordable access to care and screenings. But they also told us Texas can't look at the medical system alone for solutions. Instead, Texans say they support a broad approach: educational resources, community programs, and engagement from the food and health care industries. Nearly 80% of Texans we surveyed want doctors and nurses discussing diabetes risks, but they also recognize the need for larger stakeholders like government agencies and health insurers?to get involved. Prioritizing diabetes risk reduction can improve health outcomes, empower Texans to take control of their well-being, and save billions in avoidable health care costs. "If I live in a neighborhood that has affordable grocery stores and easy places for me to walk, and there are parks nearby, my reaction to being diagnosed with prediabetes is much different than if I live in a neighborhood that doesn't have sidewalks, I can't walk at night, there's nothing but convenience stores in the neighborhood," says EHF's Brian Sasser to Public News Service. EHF's new statewide survey shows that nearly half of Texans live in household battling #diabetes or #prediabetes. Texas is in the grip of a diabetes crisis. Only prevention can break the cycle. EHF staff On The Road: In the past few weeks, our staff have been active across Texas sharing our important mission to improve #HealthNotJustHealthCare in many different ways: We continued our support of the Texas MCO NMDOH Learning Collaborative in Austin. This initiative brings together Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) that provide Medicaid health insurance across the state to learn about effective strategies for addressing Medicaid beneficiaries’ non-medical driver of health (NMDOH) needs. Those needs include food insecurity, housing, transportation, and more. This meeting focused on implementation of HB 1575, a recently-passed law that enhances NMDOH screening for pregnant Texans with Medicaid and allows community health workers and #doulas to be reimbursed for their work to address those non-medical needs. In addition, EHF's Shao Chee Sim presented EHF's journey to create and advance this important Medicaid NMDOH work at the a meeting of the Center for #SDOH Innovation and the Association for Community Affiliated Plans (ACAP). Finally, a team of EHF staff pounded the pavement to raise money and awareness for the American Heart Association's #HeartWalk in Houston. The event focuses on preventing heart disease and stroke by supporting research and heart-healthy activity programs. New EHF Survey Reveals Texas' Diabetes Crisis WATCH NOW: A new statewide survey from Episcopal Health Foundation shows that two-thirds of Texans see type-2 diabetes as a major problem and nearly half live in households affected by diabetes or prediabetes. “Texas is experiencing a diabetes crisis, yet nine out of 10 cases of type-2 diabetes are preventable, says EHF's Ann Barnes, MD, MPH. The findings are a call to action to change the conversation in Texas to diabetes PREVENTION. Diabetes isn’t just a medical issue; it’s primarily shaped by non-medical factors, from healthy food access to affordable health care. More than 70% of diabetes-affected households in Texas say they delay care due to cost showing that the need for accessible, preventive care has never been clearer. Today, EHF released a statewide survey that shows almost half of all Texans say they live in a household battling diabetes or prediabetes. As we release the survey, State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst and the Senate Health and Human Services committee shined a bright light on the connection between food and chronic disease in an important committee hearing. We're kicking off EHF's efforts during #DiabetesAwarenessMonth with a first-ever statewide survey on diabetes in the Texas. The results should be a call to action for PREVENTION across the state! EHF's survey shows that two-thirds of Texans say type-2 diabetes is a major problem and nearly half say they live in a household experiencing #diabetes and/or #prediabetes. “Texas is experiencing a diabetes crisis, yet nine out of 10 cases of type-2 diabetes are preventable,” says EHF's Ann Barnes, MD, MPH. “These numbers confirm why we have to change the diabetes conversation in Texas to prevention through routine screening and by moving beyond medicine alone as a solution to this crisis.” Another key finding: 71% of households experiencing diabetes/prediabetes say they skipped or postponed care including check-ups, treatments, tests, and filling prescriptions.
