Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. According to the Institute of Medicine, 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point in their life. The onset of seizures can occur without warning and for a variety of reasons including: head injury, infection, brain tumor and even heredity. Major medical advances have been made in the last century that help to control or even eliminate seizures; however for almost 50% of the people with epilepsy, seizure freedom has not been attained. Seizures happen at unpredictable times and can cause problems at home, school and the workplace. The Epilepsy Alliance Ohio has been responding to the needs of the person with epilepsy, their families and the community since 1953. An array of unduplicated programs and services are provided in the Greater Cincinnati and Central Ohio areas.

Great information on how to care for our furry friends with epilepsy from member organization Epilepsy Alliance Ohio! Did you know that epilepsy can affect pets just like it does humans? While it might feel overwhelming at first, understanding epilepsy in our pets can help ensure they live happy, healthy lives. Your pet's epilepsy can be managed with proper veterinary care. If your pet has seizures, a vet can help identify the cause and recommend treatments to improve their quality of life!

**NEW FREE RESOURCE ALERT** Are you a fan of our wallet sized seizure recognition and response cards? Well, we made it even more accessible! We created a virtual wallet card providing information on how to respond to different types of seizures, what to look for, rescue medication administration videos, resources, and more! Once downloaded, it will remain in your wallet app, compatible for both Apple and Android users. The card will have a QR code which makes it possible to share the card with friends and family, teachers, roommates, caregivers, babysitters, etc. Be sure to click on the three dots in the top right corner (for Apple users) and click on "Pass Details" for more information once downloaded! We will post directions in the comments. Be on the lookout for an additional card coming soon, which can be personalized to include an emergency contact name/number, specific information pertaining to their particular type of epilepsy, and even be able to log seizure activity!
