In partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IIT Tirupati), members of the EPICS India team have been hard at work developing science experiments for 4th – 10th graders at several schools in India. Last week, an experiment focused on explaining photosynthesis was shared locally with students at Southwestern Middle School in Lafayette, Indiana. The initiative aimed to assess the feasibility of replicating such science experiments in schools across India.

Last week, EPICS students had the opportunity to learn the art of woodworking. In a workshop presented by EPICS teaching assistant, Vishnu Shankar Pookat, students built a key chain holder shelf from scratch. Not only did they learn valuable skills that will help them in their service-learning projects, but they also got to keep the shelf they made!?

Experiential learning doesn’t have to come from a competitive internship. In fact, through #Purdue University, gaining relevant skills and connections are part of a student’s semesterly curriculum in Indianapolis thanks to Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) and Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP). bit.ly/Purdue-EPICS-VIP

#PurdueEngineering is piloting a unique engineering curriculum for our students in Indianapolis. All our students in Indianapolis, regardless of major, and without exception, start their first year with project based learning, working in interdisciplinary teams and with external community or business partners in the city - ideating, co-designing, building, testing, and finding solutions across nearly a hundred projects. Each student continues project based learning as part of an EPICS or VIP team throughout their undergraduate education. This is really the best of both worlds: real-life experiential learning embedded within the curriculum for our students and a tangible benefit for community organizations and businesses throughout the city. Yesterday evening I stopped by the EPICS and VIP Poster Session at the Indianapolis campus and was so impressed with the talent, innovation and creativity of our #PurdueEngineering students. They are working on impactful projects like a test for post-stroke mobility, improving access to healthy and affordable food, and revamping physical and digital assets at a local high school. Well done!?Hands-on in Circle City: Purdue's EPICS and VIP experiences in Indianapolis. ?

The Learning Equations Across Platforms (LEAP) EPICS team delivered the result of a 10-year project, an addition to a standard Perkins brailler, to longtime partner, the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI). This device will be used by ISBVI students and transliterates braille from a typewriter into text on a computer. Learn more:?bit.ly/EPICS-brailler
