Unpopular Opinion Alert: After 18+ years in executive coaching, here's a truth that might ruffle some feathers: International Coach Federation (ICF) coaching certification, while valuable for newbie coaches, doesn't matter for seasoned professionals. It's about the equivalent of saying, "I have a college degree." It doesn't tell us much by itself. In fact, I think posting about our latest certification ( I have dozens of them) can signal "newbie" or "has too much time on their hands and has trouble getting actual clients." Here's my experience: ? Earned ICF certified in 2007 (when there were only 11k certified coaches) ? Taught ICF-approved coaching skills training courses for years ? Can't recall a single client in the last 7 years asking about coaching certifications What ACTUALLY matters to our clients: ? Real-world leadership experience - (led teams, grew a business, navigated significant leadership challenges, etc.) ? Proven track record of results - in coaching and beyond ? Cares more about adding value than following what a certification taught them coaches "should" do ? Coaching experience at the highest level with leaders like them ? Can add value from the very first conversation ? Industry experience with leaders like them ? References from other executives Don't get me wrong – ICF provides excellent foundational training. But in the high-stakes world of executive coaching, clients care more about your battle scars than your badges. I am curious: 1. If you ARE a coach: When was the last time a client asked about any of your coaching certifications? 2.     ?? Before You Hire a Coach, Ask These Two Power Questions: 1?? "What's the most you've ever invested in hiring your own coach?" I personally hired a coach for $75,000 a few years back during a critical transition because I believed in the ROI. 2?? "When was the last time you were coached?" (Yesterday for me!) Why do these questions matter? Simple. Great coaches invest in their own growth. They walk the talk. The best coaches aren't just coaching and teaching others - they're actively learning and growing themselves. They understand the client experience because they live it. Would you trust a fitness trainer who never works out? Or a financial advisor who doesn't invest? Of course not! Then why trust a coach who doesn't believe in coaching enough to invest in themselves? ?? Pro tip: Look for coaches who are committed to their own development.
