New Option Emerging for Water in the Permian A new option is coming into play in the Permian to relieve the growing pressure on water disposal.?More than ever,?operators are struggling with increased water production and?limitation on water disposal.?A new co-injection EOR technology?for unconventional reservoirs provides a much needed alternative for a beneficial use.?This method taps the enormous capacity existing to replace produced volumes with gas and surfactant treated water using EOR ETC's technology recently proven in the Bakken.? To reduce demand on disposal wells, operators are currently maximizing water re-use/re-cycling.?Also, brine concentration, non-food agricultural use and even piping water out of the Basin are being considered.?The EOR ETC water-gas co-injection technology is now available in the Permian.?This is a low-pressure injection technique that combines gas with surfactant treated produced water; stimulating imbibition of water into the matrix rock.?While surface pressure is low, this technique is able to generate bottomhole pressures near the original hydrostatic gradient using the patent-pending Rapid Switched Stacked Slug (RSSS) technique.?Over multiple Huff & Puff cycles, rotated around wells on a pad, hundreds of thousands of barrels of water are re-injected over a year as produced volumes are replaced in depleted wells and EOR benefits are captured.??
