In a significant development that marks a shift in modern conflict capabilities, the Bashneft oil refinery complex in Ufa, Russia, was struck by a drone attack at an unprecedented range of 1,350 kilometers from the frontline in the early hours of March 3, 2025. The Bashneft complex is one of Russia's largest oil refining facilities, consisting of three major production sites: Bashneft-UNPZ, Bashneft-Novoil, and Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim. With a combined annual processing capacity of 23.5 million tonnes, this complex plays a crucial role in Russia's oil refining infrastructure. Located in Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, the Bashneft complex represents a vital node in Russia's energy infrastructure network. The ability to conduct precision strikes at such distances signals a new era in conflict dynamics, where geographic remoteness no longer guarantees security for strategic assets. Until now, the Ukrainian Armed Forces had the capability to hit targets up to 1,000 kilometers away with the "UJ-22 Airborne" drone (which has a range of 800 kilometers) and the "Liutyi" model (with a range of 1,000 kilometers). Whether this latest attack signifies the introduction of a new type of drone or a modification of an existing model will become clearer over time. It is also possible that the attack was carried out by the DIU (Defense Intelligence of Ukraine) from a much closer range. This attack reveals much for both the Ukrainian and Russian sides. ?? Safe landmine marker placement using drones ?? Meet the MineMarker, developed by the Demining Research Community. A drone-deployed landmine marking flag that eliminates the need for deminers to enter minefields to place markers manually. The MineMarker integrates with automated drone-based landmine detection systems, including AI, magnetometers, and infrared. Flags can also be placed based on local civilian reports. At Eyes on Ukraine, we supply drones and collaborate with partners to produce and distribute MineMarkers. So far, we’ve delivered four drones equipped with MineMarkers to demining teams like The Sunflower Project and Prevail.
