Check out Roland's interview with?Michael Eisenberg and?Aleph on Invested - where he talks about EO's approach to investing, why President Obama owes him a chocolate cake, and more.?

“Market caps close social gaps” is something @Jeff Swartz and I were discussing when I first met my brother at heart Roland Fryer, Professor of Economics at Harvard University and founder of Equal Opportunity Ventures. That could be the title of this Invested episode.?? Roland’s not just a brilliant data guy - he also does the actual legwork, and his findings have led to groundbreaking research that has at times gotten him into trouble. Listen to the episode for the story plus a great conversation on failure, DEI vs. meritocracy, impact investing, and why President Obama owes Roland a chocolate cake. Linked below.?

A Harvard economist/MacArthur Genius and two game-changing former chancellors of DC’s public schools aren’t exactly typical in the VC world. Previously cynical about changing the education system, today Roland Fryer and Michelle Rhee bring their unique perspective to EdTech investing, having transitioned from reforming the system from the inside to disrupting it from the outside. They’ll join us on StageX to explore their evolving views, their “Social Money Multiplier” (SMM) framework, and the innovative approaches that convinced them of technology’s potential to drive systemic change. Don’t miss this thought-provoking conversation at the 2025 ASU+GSV Summit, April 6-9 in San Diego! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/giHQz2WE

In an industry known for perverse incentives and workforce shortages, Stepful brings promise and great potential to healthcare. We at EO Ventures are thrilled to have been early believers in Carl Madi's visionary idea, and we’re proud to celebrate Stepful’s impressive $31.5M Series B raise, led by Oak HC/FT. In 2021, Carl joined forces with Tressia Hobeika and Edoardo Serra to launch Stepful. Their AI-powered online program trains people for entry-level healthcare jobs—like medical assistants and pharmacy technicians—in just four months at an average cost of $2,500. This is a stark contrast to traditional trade schools or community colleges, which can take years and cost up to $20,000. The results? Stepful has grown from training 50 students in its first year to an expected 30,000 in 2024, with a 75% graduation rate. Stepful’s innovative approach combines flexible, bite-sized learning with live classes and hands-on clinical training, ensuring students are engaged and job-ready. Their AI tracks student progress and intervenes with personalized support when needed to help learners stay on track. Stepful’s 8,000 partner clinics and hospitals welcome students for training and hiring them upon graduation. This not only fills critical staffing gaps but also transforms hourly workers into salaried healthcare professionals with benefits—directly addressing a projected shortage of 3.2 million healthcare workers in the U.S. Stepful’s model doesn’t just solve a problem; it sets a new standard. We can’t wait to see what you continue to build!

Last week Michelle Rhee and Amar Kumar, founder and CEO of portfolio company KaiPod Learning, co-hosted a dinner for students from Harvard Business School and Harvard Graduate School of Education to discuss leveraging entrepreneurship to improve outcomes in education and workforce development. Michelle shared some of her key takeaways from the dinner about workforce development, industry data, and building community – they are definitely worth a read below. At EO Ventures, we’re eager to continue convening innovators and builders tackling these big challenges. Venture Partner, EO Ventures and Former Chancellor, Washington DC Public Schools

Last week, Amar Kumar and I had the pleasure of hosting a dinner for students from Harvard Business School and Harvard Graduate School of Education to discuss innovations in education and workforce development. I left inspired by the dedication to leveraging entrepreneurship to improve outcomes in these sectors. We touched on a range of topics, but a few of the takeaways on my end: ? 1.) There are tremendous opportunities for startups to drive the creation of training and pathways for students who graduate from high school and don’t think college is the right step for them. However, how we can ensure that those are high quality options that result in thriving wage jobs and real career trajectories is easier said than done. 2.) In the past there’s been a disconnect between sector and industry level data about jobs and the actual positions that employers are actively hiring for. In order to ensure that workforce solutions are effective, we have to engage more meaningfully with employers to ensure that we’re solving for the right problems. 3.) We need to continue fostering community and collaboration between educators, investors, entrepreneurs, and community leaders who are committed to driving meaningful change. This work is hard and, at times, lonely. We need to create more space for meaningful conversation on how we advance these big opportunities through innovative business models that increase both economic mobility and returns. At Equal Opportunity Ventures, we’re committed to investing in solutions that increase economic mobility and after last week’s conversation, I'm more convinced than ever that we can build a more equitable future together. For those who joined the conversation, I’d love to hear what stood out to you. Please share in the comments. We’ve been pretty quiet over here on LinkedIn and we’re excited to change that. It only feels fitting to start with a very exciting hiring update. We’re proud to share that the Equal Opportunity Ventures team is growing – a very warm welcome to Michelle Rhee, our newest venture partner. Michelle is a longtime friend to the EO Team and we’re excited to have her officially onboard. Michelle brings incredible expertise in education and workforce as someone who has fought hard for reform and transformation her entire career. We’re excited to have her apply that same tenacity and rigor to our investing in those spaces. Check-out the release we shared earlier today to learn more about Michelle and why she’s a great fit at EO Ventures. We’re excited to continue meeting founders and builders who are working to increase economic mobility in the US.
