As people debate the cloud costs associated with AI, I thought this might be a timely post to share our own journey into the world of #FinOps ?? ????????-???? ????????: ???????????????? ?????????? ?????????? It started with a large, unexpected cloud bill. Sound familiar? Like many companies, we quickly realized that cloud costs, if left unchecked, can spiral far beyond expectations. ???? ???????????? ???????? Our cloud usage was primarily project-driven, fluctuating in frequency and data volume based on client needs. With a multi-cloud environment spanning AWS and Azure, we needed anomaly management and granular visibility to multi-cloud data. The SaaS solutions we explored were closed systems—limiting our ability to integrate with other data across our enterprise. Having over two decades of experience in data analytics consulting, we knew that the real value lay in making cloud cost data accessible and actionable—whether integrating it with org hierarchies (for M&A, for example) or leveraging BI and AI tools. ?? ?????????????????? ???????????????? Our team set out to architect a data solution across two different cloud bill files (AWS and Azure) enriched with data such as price lists and observability metrics pulled via API. We advanced our cloud cost optimization best practices through our work with the FinOps Foundation. We familiarized ourselves with their maturity curve and FinOps Open Cost and Usage Standard (FOCUS) format, which was still forming. It was during our work with the #FOCUS work group that we realized the opportunity to extend FinOps to SaaS and other IT related costs (e.g., on-prem). Ultimately, we built a data lake-based solution with a Power BI semantic model that can be delivered in a client’s own environment, fast-tracking the benefits of a “build” solution without the maintenance. By aligning with Cloud FinOps best practices (i.e., FOCUS) and embracing an open architecture we built a FinOps platform that is extensible to FP&A, business applications and new capabilities such as agentic AI. Our FOCUS-compliant #Envisor FinOps platform now supports cloud costs from Azure, AWS, GCP, Snowflake and growing.. What does your journey look like?

#Microsoft’s new discount program, Defender for Cloud Commit Units (DCUs), is a classic pre-purchase plan: the more DCUs you buy, the bigger your discount, up to 22%. Sounds great, right? But there are some things to watch out for: You need to forecast your Defender usage accurately. And, buying too many DCUs can actually reduce your savings. Do yourself a favor and read this blog post by Anthony Tambasco and Dany Daya on Esty’s approach to #forecasting and #FinOps. Frankly, the title doesn’t do the post – or what they have accomplished – justice. The post shows a mature organization that has democratized its FinOps #data and embedded #uniteconomics into the fabric of its decision making. It’s a must-read and truly impressive.
