Envision Resilience Challenge

Awesome day hosting University of Virginia landscape architecture and architecture students and Professor Michael Luegering in town for the @envision resilience challenge. I lead a walking tour of a number of _rasor landscape architecture planning and design projects in Portland such as the Bayside Master Plan, Reclaiming Franklin Street Master Plan, East Bayside / DPW Master Plan, Parris Terraces, Sheridan Heights, Preble Street, The Portland Public Market, Eastern Waterfront Building Height Study, and the Maine State Pier. The students selected the Back Cove and Bayside as their studio site. Looking forward to following the progress of their work over the course of the semester.

Reflecting on Receiving Northeastern's Policy School’s Community Impact Award A few months ago, I had the incredible honor of receiving the Community Impact Award from Northeastern University's School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs. Reflecting on this recognition, I feel great appreciation for the journey that led me here. I chose to attend Northeastern because of its strong emphasis on real-world experience and its commitment to hands-on learning. Looking back, I am so grateful to see that my time in the Urban Planning and Policy program thoroughly lived up to that reputation. Engaging in impactful projects such as the Envision Resilience Challenge where we explored nature-based solutions for sea level rise in Providence, and contributing to the BSLA student charrette for a “cooling” park in Chelsea provided invaluable experiences. Working full-time in Acton during my graduate studies, I had the privilege of learning from an incredible team, as we collaborated on a diverse range of housing and sustainability projects. Our work included developing zoning policies to facilitate housing near transit, which I believe is crucial for fostering sustainable communities. Now, as I step into my role on Newton’s Long-Range Planning Team, I carry forward the lessons and experiences gained from these projects. The Community Impact Award is a reminder of the incredible support I’ve received and the opportunities I’ve been given. Thank you to Northeastern Policy School and to all who have supported and inspired me along the way. "There is positive momentum to implement more nature-based adaptations, but we need support to change the business-as-usual mindset," writes Pamela Conrad, ASLA, founder of Climate Positive Design and ASLA's inaugural Biodiversity and Climate Action Fellow. "Nature-based solutions are documented to be approximately 70% more cost-effective than gray infrastructure. However, most nature-based climate adaptation is not funded despite the fact that 800 million people will be affected by coastal flooding by 2050." Following the immersive design studio experience of this past fall, 175 university students will soon enter the workforce better equipped to take on the current and future challenges as they work toward helping to build a better world. Community leaders, builders, dreamers and doers connected with graduate and undergraduate teams of students on the ground to share what makes their hometowns special. And over the last year and a half, the communities of New Bedford and Fairhaven, Massachusetts outdid themselves in partnership with the 2023 program. It’s the people that make the Envision Resilience Challenge what it is. "It’s now clear that approximately 80% of emissions from landscape architecture projects come from materials. This includes the extraction of natural resources, and their manufacturing, transportation, and construction in parks, plazas, streets, campuses, and neighborhoods. A significant portion of emissions in the built environment can be traced back to two materials: concrete and metal, which include steel and aluminum. The challenge lies in the fact that we use a large amount of both materials, they are difficult to replace due to their strength and utility, and improving their environmental impact is a complex process. But progress is being made." Envision Resilience Challenge Portland/South Portland, Maine is off to a great start! Faculty from the Universities of Maine, Buffalo, Virginia, Michigan, Yale, Cornell, Toronto and Harvard University Graduate School of Design convened for a 3 day workshop to prepare for the collective studio. We learned about their rising, warming waters and effects on the fishing industry, housing challenges, heat concerns, and some ambitious actions that Maine is taking in response. Thank you so much to the Envision Remain team and Portland community experts for an incredible, insightful time. Can’t wait for the students to join us this fall!
