We are incredibly proud of the amazing work our Vice President of Government Affairs, Patrick Velliky, does in supporting the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation. His dedication to advocating for clinicians does not go unnoticed. We encourage you to take a moment to read the valuable insights he shared below.
Yesterday was National Health Worker Wellbeing Day, and I got to spend time with the most inspiring people I know (and have the good fortune to call friends), Corey Feist, and Stefanie Simmons, MD FACEP. Through the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation, they've made incredible progress in their mission to safeguard the wellbeing of medical professionals. With Corey's permission, I'm sharing the list of the Foundation's awe inspiring accomplishments that he read to us last night: "1) We listened to thousands of health workers, their families, and friends about the need for someone to support their mental health wellbeing 2) We responded, built the Foundation, an incredible board, and a national coalition - ALL IN Wellbeing First for Healthcare - with some of the most influential healthcare organizations in the country 3) We testified before Congress twice (once without a bio break) 4) We created landmark legislation with over $140m in new funds, took a trip to the Oval Office, and a tour on Marine One 5) We created state laws protecting the mental health of healthcare workers and eliminating administrative burdens from their shoulders 6) We created a day of the year - National Health Worker Wellbeing Day 7) We changed licensing and credentialing questions in over 33 states and changed credentialing questions in over 600 hospitals so that over 1.25 million health workers no longer have to answer stigmatizing questions about prior mental health treatment 8) We cared for our caregivers in 3 states through a new program for leaders based on materials we created with the CDC and NIOSH 9) We engaged over 200 ambassadors and developed medical student chapters (and even at one high school in Virginia) 10) We trained health care leaders and their boards 11) We gave over 400 keynote addresses and logged thousands of air miles to share our message with tens of thousands clinicians, health workers, and leaders 12) We published over 15 national articles, appeared in over 1,000 publications, participated in over 50 podcasts and hundreds of media interviews reaching millions of people in this country and beyond 13) We were honored with the highest award the U.S. Surgeon General can bestow on civilians 14) One of us received an honorary doctorate and the other gave a commencement speech at her alma mater 15) We listened to families who had lost loved ones and carried stories forward 16) We heard from doctors, nurses, and students who told us that our message saved their lives 17) We made new friends, built a community, gave hope, and took a moment and the legacy of an incredible woman and built a movement" Although I'm honored to support the work of the Foundation in my extremely small way, these are their accomplishments not mine. They've done more with fewer resources and in less time than most people could ever dream of. Their dedication to healthcare workers and to the memory of Dr. Lorna Breen is gargantuan and indominable.

Healthcare professionals—such as physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other clinicians—play a vital role in our society. We must support those who care for us by fostering an environment that promotes their professional and personal well-being. The Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation is doing remarkable work to support the mental health and well-being of individuals who face the pressures of saving lives and providing care to communities. We proudly support this foundation and the important work it carries out. #HWWBDay #ALLINforMentalHealth
? NEW INITIATIVE ALERT ?: When health workers fear seeking help, quality of care declines, mental health conditions and burnout intensify, workforce shortages grow, and lives are lost. During a normal shift as an Emergency Medicine physician, Dr. Stephanie Zguris encounters plenty of unusual situations. In this case, her thoroughness prevented a patient from suffering a catastrophic outcome. A male in his 50s presented to the emergency room with chest pain and vomiting. The original team that saw the patient ordered an evaluation for possible heart attack and a chest CT scan to evaluate for blood clots as well. The CT scan did not show a blood clot (but there was another diagnosis the CT was unable to evaluate for based on the way it was ordered). Meanwhile, the patient continued to have severe chest pain, and when Dr. Zguris re-evaluated the patient, she noted the patient did not have a detectable pulse in his left arm. Dr. Zguris reviewed the imaging work and noticed the dye on the CT scan did not opacity the aorta. She immediately ordered a second CT scan which identified tearing of the aorta, and then sent the patient immediately to the operating room for emergency surgery to repair the aortic dissection. A few days later, the patient was about to walk out of the hospital under their own power thanks to Dr. Zguris' thoroughness in giving this case a second look. Thank you, Dr. Zguris for making a great catch and putting patient safety first! #patientsafety #PSAW

Each year since 1987, the United States has recognized March as National #WomensHistoryMonth. At Envision, this is a time to acknowledge the women who have positively impacted our lives and elevate the contributions of trailblazing women in?healthcare- both as a healthcare organization and as advocates for better health outcomes. ? This year’s?theme, “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations,” encourages reflection on both the progress made and the work that remains. This theme is particularly significant in healthcare, where women make up over 70% of the workforce and continue to face significant health disparities in the United States.
