The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) is seeking a post-masters research associate focused in the area of mass spectrometry-based omics in biological, chemical, and environmental research. This research associate will be responsible for aiding in the advancement and development of the ever-expanding omics suite and advancing the goals of multiple EMSL integrated research platforms. The individual will be expected to prepare and analyze a variety of biological samples for mass spectrometry imaging and other mass spectrometry applications. It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of Dr. Jean Futrell, the inaugural director of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) (1999-2002). Futrell was a distinguished scientist who is considered the founder of modern mass spectrometry and whose contributions had a profound impact on the scientific community at large. As EMSL director, Futrell played a pivotal role in advancing molecular science. He was internationally recognized for his pioneering research focused on reaction kinetics and the dynamics of ions. His innovative work on ion-molecule reactions, high-energy ion-neutral, and ion-surface collisions led to significant advancements in the field. He was instrumental in the development of high-pressure chemical-ionization mass spectrometers, tandem ion-cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers, and very high-resolution Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance. His leadership and dedication earned him the title of Battelle Fellow. When Futrell retired in 2013, he was named a Battelle Fellow Emeritus. MONet's mission is to develop a continental-scale database of standardized molecular and microstructural data to advance understanding and prediction of soil organic carbon processes. The information provided by MONet is essential for advancing the accuracy of multiscale Earth system models and enabling the next generation of soil carbon research both at EMSL and within the broader user community.
