William Petersen joined the U.S. Army in April 2001. Seeking an opportunity to learn new skills, he chose to become a combat medic specialist. Life would soon change drastically. In the middle of his training, the events of September 11, 2001, shifted the global landscape. Billy found himself on the front lines, assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii as part of the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Golden Dragons." His first deployment in 2002, a peacekeeping mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, introduced him to the realities of military service and the essential role of a medic in maintaining soldiers' well-being. Soon, he'd be deployed to Iraq, where he served 14 challenging months as part of a quick reaction force, navigating missions across the country often at a moment's notice. "The thing that I look back on that gives me a feeling of satisfaction is remembering the lives I saved in and out of combat," Billy says. "I'm blessed to have the knowledge, experience, and ability to know what to do in a life-or-death situation." ?????? After an additional year with the National Guard, Billy earned a bachelor's degree in information technology from the University of Phoenix and another in environmental science from Washington State University Tri-Cities. With career support from veteran representatives at WorkSource, he joined PNNL as a post-bachelor's research associate in our Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate. Currently, he works with the Molecular Observation Network (MONet) at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a user facility located on our Richland, WA campus. Billy's work on projects involving X-ray computed tomography (XCT) on soil cores allows him to fulfill his commitment to a broader mission of scientific discovery.

With the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL)'s carbon labeling chamber, researchers perform tracer experiments that help identify active pathways within the plants. EMSL's Large-Scale Research and Facilities Integrating Collaborations for User Science (FICUS) program proposal calls, which open in January, will provide opportunities for researchers to access this chamber for their research. Connect with EMSL staff to learn how to use the chamber for your research and prepare for the upcoming call season: https://bit.ly/4eKgW7e (Photo by Andrea Starr | Pacific Northwest National Laboratory)

It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of Dr. Jean Futrell, the inaugural director of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) (1999-2002). Futrell was a distinguished scientist who is considered the founder of modern mass spectrometry and whose contributions had a profound impact on the scientific community at large. As EMSL director, Futrell played a pivotal role in advancing molecular science. He was internationally recognized for his pioneering research focused on reaction kinetics and the dynamics of ions. His innovative work on ion-molecule reactions, high-energy ion-neutral, and ion-surface collisions led to significant advancements in the field. He was instrumental in the development of high-pressure chemical-ionization mass spectrometers, tandem ion-cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers, and very high-resolution Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance. His leadership and dedication earned him the title of Battelle Fellow. When Futrell retired in 2013, he was named a Battelle Fellow Emeritus. Interested in learning about the Molecular Observation Network (MONet)? The Molecular Observation Network (MONet) is an open science network developed by the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), which is housed on the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory campus. MONet's mission is to develop a continental-scale database of standardized molecular and microstructural data to advance understanding and prediction of soil organic carbon processes. The information provided by MONet is essential for advancing the accuracy of multiscale Earth system models and enabling the next generation of soil carbon research both at EMSL and within the broader user community. Our team's (Emily Graham, John Bargar, Rebecca Lybrand, Arjun Chakrawal, Ph.D.) Cross-Division Symposium and Companion Session at the Three Societies Conference ASA, CSSA, SSSA, was a huge success. This Symposium was supported by Soil Physics and Hydrology Division Director and Soil Chemistry Division Director Elizabeth Gillispie, Ph.D. and also promoted by Soil Mineralogy Division Director. Thank you all for your support! If you are curious what the Symposium was about the answer is in one acronym MONet (Molecular Observation Network) Data, Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL). Thank you to all invited speakers (link below) who, as participants of MONet network, shared their inspiring visions and insights on the science possible with MONet data.?The presentations will be available for all society members to view soon—I'll post the links when they're up!
