A National Symposium on "Effective Use of Climate Friendly Technologies for Agriculture" was held at Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth last week. Environmental Defense Fund's Nikhil Goveas and Eric Davidson of University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science were guests of honour, while Alison J. Eagle, Sr Scientist, Climate Smart Ag, Environmental Defense Fund was present virtually. Alison spoke about results from our N balance trials in India which demonstrate that balanced application of fertilizer saves money, protects yields and reduces climate pollution. Eric Davidson spoke about global initiatives to improve nitrogen efficiency and the importance of focusing on reducing fertilizer waste, which helps farmers and the planet.

Are you interested in the state of play and potential of agriculture from voluntary carbon markets (VCM)? If so, do read this report from Environmental Defense Fund Agriculture is both a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions and an essential source of climate solutions. Farmers can be supported to adopt adopt climate solutions by providing additonal income streams through carbon credits. The challenges hindering VCM in agriculture include: ? Onerous carbon credit requirements for farmers. ? A perception of low returns on investment. ? Distrust in carbon offsets due to concerns about impact and insufficient monitoring. ? A lack of clear guidance on how carbon offsets interact with other financial incentives. ? Growth in some credit categories not aligned with the highest climate benefits. The report categorises agricultural climate mitigation pathways by scientific certainty - ranging from "High Scientific Certainty" (e.g., agroforestry, industrial anaerobic manure digesters) to "Low Scientific Certainty" (e.g., increased soil carbon sequestration by wetlands conversion) To improve VCM effectiveness in agriculture, the report recommends: ? Strengthening VCM infrastructure through better governance and standardised monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV). ? Expanding demand for high-quality agricultural credits by engaging companies and governments. ? Improving guidance to facilitate funding for agricultural climate solutions.
