Before coming to Tandon, Deborah Alabi (BS ‘21, MS ‘22) was inspired to study nuclear sciences and engineering by her interest in the energy industry as a whole. And through her coursework as an undergraduate, she began to investigate the fundamentals of nuclear energy and what role nuclear energy could play in the shift towards a cleaner energy future. Alabi earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tandon. During her time at Tandon, she served as co-president of the NYU Chapter of the ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and as president of the Collegiate Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (National Office) (AABE) New York Metropolitan Area Chapter, where she’s still an active member and mentor. Since graduating, Alabi has worked as a mechanical engineer for Environ Energy — organizing, auditing, and managing client data to achieve sustainability and energy efficiency goals. She’s cited Hazel R. O’Leary as a pioneering figure in energy, who was the first African American and first woman to serve as the United States Secretary of Energy under President Bill Clinton. #NYUTandonMade
