New on Entomology Today: The European earwig (Forficula auricularia) has been identified as a potential pest in citrus groves. Researchers have developed a cost-effective sampling method to study the earwigs' impact and movement, though thus far the economic impact of their damage to citrus crops has been "hard to pin down."

Another branch meeting complete! This week I participated in Entomological Society of America’s Southwestern Branch meeting in Round Rock, TX. My favorite part was the Insect Expo ???????; it’s an outreach event that fostered about 500 kids, who came to learn about insects and other critters. As in other branches, we had good engagement in the town hall for the Governance Upgrade. Thank you ESA folks for showing up and contributing your ideas. I especially like seeing early career and students participating at these town halls. Finally, shout out to Laura Weiser-Erlandson and the rest of the executive committee for leading this successful meeting. I also got to see the biggest donuts ?? I’ve ever seen in my life! The cherry on top was having part of my entomology lab traveling with me and participating in this meeting. Earl Agpawa received 1st place in the Master poster competition, and Dr. Nupur Sarkar received the Friends of IPM Bright Idea award! Looking forward to the next meeting in Salt Lake City this weekend. #ESASWB2025

As we near the close of #WomensHistoryMonth, ESA marks the notable work, contributions, and leadership of women entomologists in insect science. —Four women entomologists currently serve as officers on the Governing Board of ESA: Lina Bernaola, president; Melissa Willrich Siebert, vice president; Jennifer Henke, past president; and Faith Oi, treasurer. https://lnkd.in/euJFHAAq —In 2024, Michelle Smith (she/her) was elected as an ESA Honorary Member (https://lnkd.in/epSRSaBh), and Betsy Beers was selected as an ESA Fellow (https://lnkd.in/eEArMfsb). —In the Spring 2024 issue of American Entomologist, Lila Cannon examined the ties through time between a 17th-century entomologist and a young aspiring scientist today. “Maria Sibylla Merian and Bobbi Wilson: Challenging Inequality Through A Love of Entomology” https://lnkd.in/eCSHNRAm —In the Fall 2024 issue of American Entomologist, ESA Fellow Nannan Liu shared five keys to success in her career. “Curiosity, Passion, Learning, Motivation, and Persistence: The Keys to a Successful Career Journey in Science” https://lnkd.in/em7fXMje —Meanwhile, entomologists Melissa Schreiner, Anh Tran, and Liz Walsh were among ESA members featured in 2024 in the Entomology Today "Standout Early Career Professionals" series: ——Melissa Schreiner: "How a Colorado Extension Entomologist Wrangles Pests and Protects Biodiversity” https://lnkd.in/eJwJxRsS ——Anh T.: "A Series of Fortunate Events: One Entomologist’s Journey Into an Industry Career" https://lnkd.in/eW5FaK3y ——Elizabeth Walsh: "How a High-School Beekeeper Made Her Way to USDA Honey Bee Researcher" https://lnkd.in/eW6jAF4q —And, from the archives, be sure to check out the Entomology Today series on more famous women in the history of entomology: https://lnkd.in/e4j7e6Mt

?? Today is #EqualPayDay! The wage gap persists, especially in STEM. With federal workforce cuts & uncertain research funding, salary transparency is more important than ever. Take action: Participate in ESA’s Insect Science Career Data to help advance pay equity, understand salary trends, and support fair pay & job security in entomology.

As funding and workforce disruption harms U.S. science, the ESA Member Support Fund will pay affected entomologists' membership dues, allowing beneficiaries to maintain access to ESA member benefits and stay connected to the insect science community. https://lnkd.in/ev_nmPVm Please join us in supporting your colleagues in a time of need. Your donation will be matched by the Society, dollar for dollar, up to $25k, for a total of $50k in potential member support. https://lnkd.in/eEKKzWJ2 If you have been affected, apply now for an ESA membership fee waiver. The application form only takes a few minutes to complete. https://lnkd.in/ezTg-iKJ

I had a great time attending the 2025 Eastern Branch Meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania last weekend! I learned so much from the fascinating exhibitions and talks about insects and agriculture. I gave a presentation sharing distribution models and discussing patterns of habitat suitability, historical sampling bias, and climate vulnerability of several dragonfly species based on data collected during our Summer 2024 fieldwork trip in Ghana. It was a pleasure participating in the Student Oral Presentation Competition with my partners Eva Gates and Myah Massiah! Special shoutout to Dr. LaDage, Dr. Jessica Ware, Dr. Adu, and Aaron Goodman for the guidance and support while preparing! The energy and conversations at this conference made it truly a memorable experience.?? #Entomology #EnvironmentalScience #UndergraduateResearch #PennState

Entomological Society of America's Eastern Branch Meeting in Harrisburg was a blast! It was fun to return to a branch meeting as a graduate student after my first branch meeting in 2022 as an undergrad. The Penn State University Nittany Antlions took 1st place in the Entomology Games and will be competing in Portland, OR this November. So grateful to all my teammates for their dedication and hard work ?? I won 2nd place in the PhD ten minute paper competition for my talk on using chemical elicitors as an pollinator friendly #IPM tool in cucurbits.
