One important thing to understand is that we don't argue against permissioned access on app or service level. This is - despite my wish for more financial inclusion - necessary for certain financial applications. BUT it is not necessarily right to derive from this that the foundational infrastructure has to be permissioned. The success of the most scalable technical infrastructure (internet, mailing systems, etc.) show that an open permissionless approach is superior and more resilient. There are several layers at play here. We think the lowest level could benefit from a permissionless approach - and that it is worth to investigate how this should be done to satisfy every stakeholder.

Unlocking the Future of Permissionless Blockchains in Financial Services Recent discussions have highlighted a critical need: instead of imposing restrictive regulations, we need collaborative dialogue between regulators and industry stakeholders to align permissionless #blockchains more with current requirements around financial use cases. While permissioned blockchains have shown limited success, true innovation emerges from the permissionless space. A recent paper based on a roundtable discussion by Zühlke Group explores this topic in depth. Key challenges identified: 1?? Settlement Finality: Financial institutions require deterministic rather than probabilistic settlement finality 2?? Identity Management: Absence of standardized identity frameworks for KYC/AML compliance 3?? Economic Barriers: Significant costs related to exchange fees and regulatory compliance 4?? Risk Framework: Need for clear standards and requirements for operational resilience 5?? Privacy Solutions: Balancing transparency with confidentiality requirements Path Forward: ?? Foster international collaboration ?? Establish clear regulatory requirements ?? Support technological innovation Most challenges facing permissionless blockchains are solvable. The goal shouldn't be to transform permissionless blockchains into permissioned systems, but to enhance their capabilities while preserving their unique advantages. Success requires constructive dialogue between #regulators and industry participants rather than adversarial relationships. This follows bold plans earlier this year to tokenize funds and issue tokenized bonds. But why the pivot? ?? ?? Private, permissioned blockchains owned by individual banks seem to be a hard sell for clients who value interoperability and want to avoid vendor lock-in. ?? Enter Public & Permissionless Blockchains: ? With maturing privacy tech and permissioning capabilities, public blockchains are rapidly becoming more appealing. ? Major players like BlackRock and Societe Generale - FORGE are already embracing them in their adoption strategies. ?? What’s holding banks back? Bank for International Settlements – BIS classifies permissionless blockchains as high risk—requiring significant risk-weighted capital to use. So industry player owned and backed consortium chain is an in-between solution until regulatory clarity improves. ?? The takeaway: The tide is turning, and public blockchains are gaining momentum in the tokenization movement.
