Navigating Change in Healthcare: A Focus on SDOH Change is never easy. It’s uncomfortable, it’s challenging, and letting go of legacy systems is especially hard when tenured leaders and teams hold tight. But when it comes to Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), change is not just necessary—it’s inevitable. Here are two thoughts as we work with clients on this critical issue: 1?? SDOH transcends administrations. Regardless of the current or future presidential administration, SDOH must remain central to healthcare for the good of humanity. If you're holding onto legacy systems—whether internal processes or external/vendor partnerships—remember, those systems were not designed to address today’s SDOH demands. 2?? CMS audits are here to stay. Audits have been a constant across administrations, and they’ll continue, likely with increased scrutiny on Medicare losses in the future. Preparing for these audits means aligning with solutions that are built for today’s challenges, not yesterday’s systems. It's been 2 years! 2 beautiful, challenging, fruitful, terrifying, years that have required massive faith and grit. They have been both long and short years. Together, we've built better and more than expected! We've made positive impact, both expected and wonderfully unexpected. I've authored 2 "how to" books, one of my business partners added me to an opportunity and we are exploring an opportunity with a colleague of mine. Being a Founder is like riding your favorite, most exhilarating rollercoaster you have ever ridden but without up-to-date guardrails that keep you safe. Whew. #therightkindofchaos July 8, 2022 - Then and now! Almost a decade since I left the desert for a job in my home state. I'm 9 years older, a little thicker of body, and I have a few more lines that mark my face from frowns and smiles! I'm leaving today with no pomp or circumstance. I'm moving on from corporate-type roles I've had in healthcare at this employer and a few others, taking a risk for something GREAT!! I am excited and anxious at the same time. One thing I am certain of is that I am so much better today because of the teams here at BCBST and the partners I've worked with in the last decade.
