This will make it easier to remove screw elements in the future ? When putting ENTEK screws onto the shafts, make sure the laser engraving is facing the gearbox ? Always work your way backwards when starting up your line. ? Start the pelletizer first ? Then your water bath circulation pump, or gala spin dryer and water pump ? If you have melt pump, start the melt pump ? Then the extruder screws and the feeders last? ? Always start the extruder process vacuum pump last when the extruder has stabilized ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ????????????????: Follow a front to back approach. Always work your way forwards when shutting down your line. ? Stop the extruder process vacuum pump first ? Followed closely by stopping the feeders, with the polymer feeder being the last feeder to be shut off ? Run for a minute or two and then shutdown the extruder screws ? Followed by the melt pump (if you have one) ? Scaling Up: From a Lab Curiosity to a Commercial Factory Based on the IP we developed at The University of Georgia, we launched ALGIX, Inc in 2010. We had the science and a vision, but scaling up into a viable manufacturing process and business? That was a whole different beast. Our first years of R&D were focused on testing blends of #ALGAE and different types of polymers in a range of #thermoplastic processes at the lab and pilot scale… extrusion, injection molding, thermoforming, film extrusion, fiber extrusion, and filament extrusion. We secured a grant from the State of Georgia to scale up and commercialize our #sustainable technology, but we needed a clear product and customer. We explored a range of products from biodegradable flower pots, to mulch films, to packaging containers. After identifying dozens of companies and sending out samples and follow up meetings we believed that we were getting close to our first product. However, due to our lab scale and toll-based production, our costs were so high that no company would take us seriously… we needed to take a leap of faith to scale up to the next level. And in 2014, we needed a #factory to make it happen. This is where a simple Google search changed our lives for the foreseeable future. We knew that there were algae blooms occurring in fish ponds within a few hundred miles of our lab… in Alabama and Mississippi’s aquaculture industry. Catfish was king in this part of the farming community, and large sprawling fish ponds covered over 100,000 acres… All choked full of algae blooms. The amount of algae we calculated was immense… and the cost of cultivation was essentially zero. However, the cost of acquisition still required some investment. We took our lab scale algae harvester and scaled it up into a trailer-mounted algae harvesting monster that used tiny air bubbles, salts and a skimmer to separate out algae biomass and returned cleaned, filtered, and oxygenated water back into the pond… the catfish LOVED it! The system gave us what we needed… copious amounts of algae that we could use to scale up on our new ENTEK International extruder. Most people wouldn’t expect a cutting-edge bio-materials factory to pop up in a small Southern city, but #Meridian #Mississippi had everything we needed—low costs of living, abundant industrial real-estate, skilled workers, and prime logistics. Opening that factory was terrifying. Millions of dollars in equipment, long hours, endless problem-solving. The first time we saw a finished batch of algae-infused pellets pour off the line, I felt this overwhelming mix of exhaustion and excitement. "but we actually did it…..from pond to product” However, when realized that we could take one of our compounds, and foam it into a flexible foam we landed on something that foamed perfectly for #footwear. That was when BLOOM Sustainable Materials was born—a material that could displace traditional #EVA polymer in foamed footbeds, shoe soles and more!
