Last Thursday, November 21st, marked one year since the first residents began calling Ensō Village home. The evening’s Anniversary Harvest Meal brought together current and future residents, board members, and staff to reflect on a year of community building. Everyone gathered rejoiced in gratitude and honored the harvest season with a feast of delicious, seasonal foods, thoughtfully served by management to all in attendance. With its first year behind, Ensō Village steps into another chapter, continuing to foster the shared values of mindful living and community. Enso Village is America’s first and only Zen-inspired senior living community, creating a workplace unlike any other. Here, staff and residents are an integral part of our community’s wellbeing, forming close and meaningful relationships while upholding both our professionalism and humanity in equal measure. Mindfulness - We understand wellness to include care for the mind, offering mindful spaces and time for silence, meditation, and work practice as well as traditional Zen rituals. Sustainability - We commit to environmental stewardship built on measurable objectives with respect to our occupied spaces and daily nourishment. Enso Village, a Zen-inspired Kendal Life Care Community in California, is delighted to announce the appointment of David Smart as the community’s new Executive Director, effective January 2025. David's leadership philosophy aligns seamlessly with Ensō Village's core values. "There are so many things about Ensō Village that speak to me on a personal and professional basis," David shared. "I have built my leadership skills over the years for an opportunity just like this. My philosophy with residents is this is their home, and they will (and should) have a say in what happens in the community. And I have an affinity for staff because I have been in their shoes for many years, working in communities since I was 14 years old. I look forward to bringing my decades of experience with visioning the future, strategic planning, operational management, fiscal oversight, and leadership to Ensō Village as this unique community grows." During my last visit to Enso Village, I had an opportunity to meet Chef Patrick. He is the new baker for the community and brings a strong passion for breads and pastries. He has big plans to expand the program under Kyle Evans, CDM, CFPP leadership. I am excited to see how they work together to bring a variety of baked goods to community. Enso Village Celebrates New Beginnings | Annual Report. Ensó Village celebrated a myriad of milestones in the past few years as the teams from San Francisco Zen Center and Kendal refined the vision of Zen Inspired Living and delivered the beautiful campus to the first generation of residents. The first milestone was the creation of the partnership between these two organizations and the establishment of a Board of Directors, which provided the guidance and support needed to open this first-of-its-kind community.
