Chalkbeat is made of 8 local bureaus (like ours) and a national team, and the power of being a network is that we can team up to write national stories that include local reporting from local journalists. I'm so proud that Chalkbeat Indiana journalists helped show what it was like to teach about the election before the election AND what it was like in schools the day after the election. I'm proud because Aleks and Amelia told powerful stories, and it's fun to be included in group projects. In July, I was elected to the Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis Board of Directors! It is an absolute blessing to expand my service to an amazing organization that serves girls to be #SmartStrongBold. Simply grateful at the opportunity.

Incredibly thankful for the opportunity to go to Washington DC, taking over Capitol Hill with my ILI Cohort to share our perspective, stories, and recommendations on Work Force Development, Immigration Reform, and Educational Equity during the last week all of our nation’s leaders were in DC prior to the election. We were in DC with a jam packed schedule with Representatives, Senators (including our very own Todd Young), the U.S. Department of Education, Excelencia in Education, The White House, The Pentagon, The FBI, and two embassies (El Salvador and Rwanda). As exhausting as it may have seemed, it was the most rewarding experience I’ve had. A whole hearted thank you to Indiana Latino Institute (Marlene Dotson) and Enlace Academy (Katie Dulay) for allowing me to advocate for mi gente and the greater good of Indiana and the United States. I’m excited to have met so many amazing people during this experience and now connect with more role models in my career! Melody Gonzales, you inspired me in ways that I can’t even begin to put in words. Let’s just say, one day, I too, will be in the White House, but wearing bright red lipstick, and my gold hoops! It’s been a whirlwind of a month, but I’m blessed to have been afforded these opportunities and the several acknowledgements during Hispanic Heritage Month.
