#COP29 today has a unique chance to reconcile climate, nature, and people. Solving the twin crisis of #climatechange and #biodiversityloss cannot be done but together. ?? At the international and national level, governments have dealt with climate change and biodiversity separately. Now, we are in a unique moment towards conversion. COP29 started days after the end of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) #COP16, which was the first after the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework?(#GBF). GBF has a plan to reverse and halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and live in #harmonywithnature by 2050. COP29 must therefore build upon the work of COP16 and address some of its flaws, specially on #finance and #funding. ?? The United Nations has already affirmed biodiversity to be 'our strongest natural defense against climate change' and climate change to be 'the primary driver of biodiversity loss'. A combined solution is not only necessary but logical and that's where COP29 should stand now as towards strong support for nature-based solutions, such as protecting #forests. Also for this reason, the EU Council's announcement yesterday is welcomed. It reaffirmed that the targeted amendment of the #EUDR will not affect the substance of its rules to minimize the EU's contribution to #deforestation and #forestdegradation globally. ?? Today at COP29 is also about #IndigenousPeoples and their priorities that include access to direct financing. According to the World Economic Forum, Indigenous people protect 80% of the remaining global biodiversity and their role in conservation and restoration of ecosystems is essential. To tackle the twin crisis, countries must recognize and respect their rights and rights to their lands, and push financing forward, for example, by enhancing fair and equitable benefits sharing (#ABS). These developments have, of course, a direct impact for companies worldwide in both their role in protecting climate and nature and also in investing in them. #Sustainability & #ESG #reporting, #duediligence, and #investment goes in the right direction to ensure resources are allocated in the right place. I have mixed feelings today, on the day of urbanisation, transport and tourism at COP29.??Logistics and transportation have been crucial to development and key for global commerce. It is essential to find actionable solutions to decarbonize taking into consideration collateral effects. Regarding tourism and urbanisation, I am confident there is willingness from big hospitality groups and governments, and here is what I would like to see more: - communities being represented and having the means to take care of their land; and - countries defending and preserving their land and their people over any promises of development and job opportunities. To wrap up, I am big fan of economists since they have a very peculiar way of seeing and explaining things. One of the main lessons I have learnt from them is that everything has a cost, therefore every decision has its costs, dependencies and collateral effects. So yes, my wish is a just transition for all. Decarbonization and all these pledges will inevitably affect other areas positively and some others negatively and if we are aware of the positive and the negative aspects there will always be a way of preventing or solving any drawbacks. Thank you, Michiel Scholberg, for passing me the COP29 baton! The spotlight at COP29 today is on human capital, with a focus on youth and education. The impacts of climate change have been on display this year, from severe flooding in East Africa, to heat waves throughout Asia, droughts in Mexico and Europe, and severe storms and wildfires in North America. Climate change will require a whole-of-society approach, supported by healthier, better-educated, and adequately skilled individuals, particularly youth. Sustainable futures are built by empowering the next generation with the knowledge and tools to combat climate change. Prioritizing the health and education of the youth can allow us to work toward solving complex climate resilience challenges and tackling urgent needs – like protecting the #coralreefs. Supporting children in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (#STEM) and opening pathways to prepare young people to enter and excel in the workforce is an investment in the future and should be a strategic priority for businesses and societies globally. By empowering our youth, we can work to bridge the talent gap, foster climate resilience, and ensure that the next generation is prepared to lead us into a more sustainable and inclusive future. Regulatory frameworks should prioritize climate education and youth engagement, ensuring they are at the heart of our sustainability strategies. Today at COP29, we highlight the urgent need for regulations that can evolve alongside emerging technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) and green hydrogen. These innovations have the potential to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and pave the way for a more sustainable future. Thank you Yangyang Geng for passing the baton to me! How do you see the role of #energytransition in supporting global security and economic stability? Today, COP29 is focusing on the energy transition and its intersection with peace, relief, and recovery. The rapid phase-out of fossil fuels and a transition to renewable energy sources are critical.? Last year, COP28 marked a turning point with the first-ever consensus to "transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems." Yet, despite this historic agreement, fossil fuel use and exports continue to rise, with new projects in oil and gas still being approved. While COP29 may struggle to set timelines or firm language on fossil fuel reduction, there is hope some nations will advocate for a halt on new coal plant permits. This year's discussions also center around ambitious pledges—to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030. These goals are essential to ease demand for fossil fuels while providing reliable, affordable energy.? Divisions remain on the #climatefinance, with questions of who should also fund the transition and how much. The newly proposed Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance aims to support countries heavily reliant on fossil fuel economies in making the shift. Policies need to be in place to ensure this transformation enhances job security, economic stability, and energy security. By removing implementation barriers and creating incentives for sustainable growth, we can advance a resilient energy transition that supports all sectors, including those traditionally reliant on fossil fuels. As we navigate these conversations at COP29, the need for a unified, actionable approach to energy transition is greater than ever.
