Enhanced Weathering seems to bring out the ambitious, audacious, even the arduous. This is really exciting watershed-scale research that shows the impacts of silicate mineral additions on the carbonate budget. ??
Building on Decades of Research: Enhanced Rock Weathering at Sleepers River Research Watershed For over six decades, the Sleepers River Research Watershed (SRRW) in Vermont has been one of the most studied river basins in the U.S. Scientists have used this 111-square-kilometer natural laboratory to investigate hydrology, snowmelt, biogeochemical cycling, and climate change impacts. This history of research provides a steady foundation for groundbreaking work in carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Professor James Saiers and PhD candidate Quinn Zacharias of Yale University’s Center for Natural Carbon Capture are leading an innovative study at SRRW on Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW)—a nature-based carbon removal strategy with the potential to lock away CO? for thousands of years while improving soil health. SRRW is an ideal place for this research because of its diverse landscape. SRRW is home to a blend of farmland, northern hardwood forests, and riparian zones, this makes it representative of glacially formed upland environments across the northeastern U.S., southern Quebec, and even parts of Europe. This means the findings here are not just local, they are globally relevant for understanding how ERW interacts across different ecosystems. In June 2023, the Yale team applied 400 tonnes of finely crushed basalt to pasture and hayfields at a rate of 20 tonnes per hectare, monitoring its effects on stream chemistry, soil fertility, and long-term carbon sequestration. Early findings observe increased stream alkalinity, improved soil pH, and deeper insights into how weathering processes influence biogeochemical cycles. SRRW is uniquely positioned to provide relevant data-driven insights into the future of nature-based CDR solutions. Saiers, Zacharias, and their team are helping to shape the next generation of climate strategies.
