On Wednesday, November 13th, Rotary Club of Cambridge, MA joined ENB at the Hildebrand Family Self-Help Center, Inc. to host Mock Job Interviews for students that are part of the English Works for Newly Arrived Immigrants Program - a pilot project in partnership with the state of Massachusetts where shelter residents are able to improve on their?English skills in order to secure housing and employment. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with Rotary members, as well as practice for the jobs they will soon be applying for. Our shared love for diversity, peace, community and exchange will help us stick together!
关于我们
The mission of English for New Bostonians and the English Works Campaign is to increase access to high-quality ESOL classes for adults in Boston and across the Commonwealth. Our Vision: Boston will be a welcoming city that offers immigrants the opportunity to learn English and integrate into all aspects of civic life. Through significant and coordinated investments by the public, private and non-profit sectors, adult English language learners will be able to learn English at home, at work, or in the community and fulfill their dreams and roles as citizens, community members, parents, workers, and entrepreneurs. The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) system will offer flexibility; will take into account differing learning styles, formal education levels, and student goals; and will include evaluation and accountability measures to ensure program quality. Our Approach: English for New Bostonians (ENB) is a public-private-community collaboration addressing the urgent need for increased English language learning opportunities for adult immigrants in Boston. Comprised of the City of Boston, foundations, corporations, non-profits, and community organizations, ENB works to support high-quality, accessible ESOL programs; to expand Boston’s capacity to serve English language learners; to test new strategies to reach learners at home, in the community, and at work; to encourage new investment by diverse stakeholders; to heighten awareness about the importance of adult English language learning; and to support the development of a coordinated ESOL system in Boston.

Huge thanks to WCVB Channel 5 and Cityline Host/Executive Producer Karen Holmes Ward for leaning in on today's show to see how immigrant communities are already experiencing the threats of the incoming administration and how we are preparing. In the 8-min segment, Sarah Sherman-Stokes of the Boston University Immigrants' Rights and Human Trafficking Program offers a powerful analysis on legal avenues at the individual, local and state level, and I was glad to share how English for New Bostonians and ESOL programs are the place where immigrants will find hope, community and sound information about their rights. Always. https://lnkd.in/eUd2tSHV

Grateful that Raising Our Voices 24' was more than just another event! Thank you Joy MacFarland for your meaningful message!
There are times that shake our faith, that ask more questions than they answer, and I know I am not alone when I say that this week has been one of those times for me. Yesterday was a day for being off the grid, for reflection, processing, for quiet. Today I came back to the office, starting off the day still a little unsteady. But we had the English for New Bostonians Raising our Voices Breakfast this morning-it was an event filled with beautiful reminders of what English language programs, adult ed programs, and community can provide.?We heard heartfelt comments, shed a tear or two together, and I left with new resolve, feeling uplifted and reminded of how lucky I am to do what I do.?I left reminded of my WHY. Why do I do what I do??Why do I work with English language teaching and materials??A big part of it is to make sure that anyone that moves here is welcomed the same way I was when I moved to a foreign country (even when we all move for different reasons and with different levels of language and resources), and that we help to give them the tools to be successful-English language skills to be able to study, get better jobs, better opportunities.?Bigger picture-I will always believe that the more that people can learn languages and communicate, the more conversations can be had between people from different backgrounds, the more learning can be done about people that are different from us, the more “the other” becomes less scary.
