How to Select a Quality Metal Roof Supplier Quality is king when selecting a metal supplier for your customer’s?metal roofing or?gutter?project. There are many credible metal suppliers to choose from, but it’s essential to know that the supplier you’ve selected is as concerned about the outcome of your installation as you are. Be careful to choose a supplier that subjects all the painted coils it produces to a comprehensive quality check before each coil leaves its facility and arrives at your location or job site. Why is this important, you ask? Without subjecting the coil you purchase to a stringent battery of tests before it leaves the paint line, you and your customer are playing Russian roulette concerning the project you are working on. Comprehensive QA testing will ensure that the coating on the coil you receive has the precise color, gloss, adhesion, and durability you’ve been promised and that your customer expects. Bending Techniques for Aluminum Differ From Steel When metal roofing manufacturers first introduced aluminum material for?roofing, much of the aluminum produced was .032 thick. However, the building products industry has gravitated to thicker roofing and trim materials, especially aluminum, over the years. Dade County, Florida, enacted new wind uplift rules for metal roofing that required .040 aluminum for roofs and .050 thickness for trim material to meet the rule requirements. Consequently, contractors were transitioning from 018 to .024 thick Galvalume or Hot-Dipped Galvanized steel roofing and trim products to .032 to .050 thick Aluminum. Many contractors assumed aluminum bent the same way as steel and thought minor adjustments were needed to make crisp bends on aluminum, as they had done with steel. This resulted in some contractors bending these heavier aluminum products beyond their tensile strength limits, cracking the metal and paint and leaving a silver look from the crazed aluminum under the paint. Contractors can prevent the aluminum alloy from cracking under the bending strain by adequately adjusting the sheet metal bending brake. To set up the hand brake to perform the bend, recess the top clamping leaf. This will reduce the amount of strain applied to the aluminum and allow you to properly bend the aluminum alloy sheet. Why Metal Roofs are Sustainable ? Metal roof systems?have long been popular with architects for their aesthetics and long-term performance characteristics, particularly their low maintenance costs and durability. But now, with the concept of sustainability so widely embraced by the architectural community, metal roofs are being seen in a new light.?Metal roofs’ long life, high recycled content, total recyclability, and energy efficiency?allow “cool metal roofs” to play a pivotal and vital role in creating the condition under which “humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations.” Metal roofing products last longer than conventional ones and are 100 percent recyclable. In contrast to conventional roofing products, there’s no need to replace a product that needs large amounts of petroleum and large areas of landfills to get rid of it. New Jersey Residence Designed As Net Zero Energy Structure Designed and built as a pilot project by Suntuity Home (in partnership with Square Center LLC Architecture and Design and Englert Inc.), the nearly 6,000-square foot home in Piscataway, New Jersey, was built with sustainability, energy efficiency, and comfort in mind. The roof profile selected for the Net Zero Home was the Englert A1500 snap lock panel system in dark bronze, and it covers over 5,000 square feet on the main roof and the outdoor kitchen beside the pool. Courses For AIA-CEU Credits ? Englert offers courses for AIA-CEU for Architects. We currently have courses on:. Metal Roof Design in HVHZs: Best Practices for Architects and Roof Designers The beaches and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean are some of the advantages of living in Florida. However, the extreme wind forces from hurricanes can easily damage even the strongest buildings and cause billions of dollars in property loss. As a result, certain areas of Florida―Miami-Dade and Broward Counties—have been designated High Velocity Hurricane Zones. The building products used in these zones must be laboratory tested to meet extreme wind and pressure performance standards. This course explains why a metal roof system designed to minimize the damage from hurricanes is important. ? Standing Seam Metal Roofing: Prepainted Architectural and Structural Panel Systems A metal roof combines performance and aesthetics to give commercial and residential buildings strength, longevity, and character. This course examines the features and benefits of standing seam metal roofing and explains the factors to consider when selecting a project-specific metal roofing system.
