We were delighted to host the "Bridging the Career Gap in the Water and Environment Sector" event in Clyde Road on the 9th of October. The event offered students and graduates the opportunity to converse with professionals from the sector in an informal manner, with pizza and refreshments. Many thanks to our speakers on the night; Colette O'Shea, Dave Ludgate, Jonathan Cooper and Alexander Locher. The event wouldn't have been possible without the organisational skills of Josh Koikkara, Dr. Sheila Convery and our wonderful MC Maeve Martin. Many thanks to Andy Heekin and John Fox and colleagues for hosting a keen bunch of engineers at the Boherbue Wastewater Treatment Plant where we got to see in person the many sustainability enhancing features - I particularly enjoyed seeing the sludge drying reed beds and the array of pv panels on site.

Site Visit - Boherbue Waste Water Treatment Plant Thursday 27th June 1pm - 3pm https://lnkd.in/eDb8ZwjG Agenda:? 1:15pm - Convene at Boherbue WWTP 1:30pm - Begin site tour 3:00pm - Close Participants are asked to bring their own 5 point PPE where possible (Glasses, Gloves, Hi Vis, Hard hat and safety boots). Please indicate if you do not have 5 point PPE available to use Uisce éireann, working with Cork County Council, has completed an over €9 million upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant at Boherbue. This project has improved the performance and capacity of the plant, as well as the quality of water discharged into receiving waters. Glanua delivered the project on behalf of Uisce éireann. Description The original wastewater infrastructure in the village was overloaded and outdated and the wastewater effluent did not consistently meet the standards required by the EPA licence, due to the assets that were in place. The plant discharges treated wastewater into the River Brogeen which is a protected conservation area and home to the freshwater pearl mussel.? The upgrade project had enhanced sustainability outcomes including for example,?the use of sludge drying reed bed, installation of a solar panel farm and continued use of the existing constructed wetlands. During the site visit, you will get a chance to find out more about the key components of the project (see below) as well as informal networking with fellow participants. Decommissioning of the existing plant and its associated structures Construction of a new facility in the townland of Laharn West to serve a population equivalent of 1200. New Inlet Works, Stormwater tank, biological treatment process, tertiary solids removal, Sludge drying reed beds. Solar Panel farm (over 100 solar panels) and continued use of the existing constructed wetlands. Connection to the existing outfall pipe to safely discharge treated wastewater into the Brogeen River.

Micropollutants: classes, treatment and legislative framework Dr. Fabio Bacci Innovationanager, Glanua 29th May, 1-2pm Webinar https://lnkd.in/edRtBpZn Join the Water & Environment Society for this lunchtime webinar Micropollutants, trace level organic contaminants, are stealthily infiltrating our environment, posing a growing risk to human health and sustainability goals. This webinar, presented by Fabio Bacci, Innovation Manager at Glanua will present the challenges micropollutants present to operators in both drinking water and wastewater management. As governments, activists, and consumers increasingly recognise the environmental and health risks associated with micropollutants in our water sources, the pressure mounts for the water sector to act swiftly and decisively. In this webinar, we'll cover: An introduction to various classes of micropollutants An overview of the legal framework driving the market demand for technologies to combat micropollutants A summary of the commercialised techniques to separate and destroy micropollutants Understanding the unique characteristics of pharmaceuticals compared to other emerging organic pollutants Speaker information: Fabio is a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (MCIWEM C.WEM) specialising in emerging pollutants. Fabio was awarded a PhD by University College Cork in 2017 and is currently a MBA student at the University of Limerick. In his capacity as Innovation Manager of the Glanua Group, Fabio works on business development for innovation, adhering to the pragmatic principle that progress must be governed by an equilibrium between environmental stewardship and the essential advancements necessary to ensure societal well-being. Fabio founded the British Water Micropollutants Focus Group in 2020 and has acted as chair and convenor of the group until July 2023.
