As a Fulbright Specialist, School of Engineering Education at Purdue University's Kerrie Douglas spent time this summer at University College London where she worked to improve its engineering program's assessment strategies and provided guidance on ways to approach engineering education research. Douglas was invited to take part in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of UCL’s Integrated Engineering Program. She joined a working group charged with strengthening and enhancing the program, specifically focusing on ways to collect evaluation data to meet the information needs of the program’s stakeholders. She also shared an evaluation framework developed from her previous research that could be adapted to their needs. In addition, she evaluated classroom assessments in UCL’s mechanical and electrical engineering programs and helped devise new approaches to assessing students in engineering classrooms to buffer the challenges presented by artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT. https://lnkd.in/gKf4wS9K Fulbright Association

The work of Purdue University researchers to bring quantum education to pre-college classrooms continues with a two-year, NSF-funded pilot project in six Indiana middle schools. School of Engineering Education at Purdue University's Muhsin Menekse and colleagues will work with teachers to develop and implement science units in which students can interact with the quantum concepts—such as quantum randomness and superposition—through real-world applications involving radioactive decay and light. https://lnkd.in/gZdTg_F9

Research found that peer evaluations collected as a normal part of an engineering course can be used as a window into team dynamics to reveal marginalization as it occurs. The research team—which included School of Engineering Education at Purdue University Professors Alice Pawley and Matthew Ohland, Associate Professor Stephanie Masta, and Florida International University's Darryl Dickerson—designed an algorithm that was able to identify student engineering teams where microaggressions and marginalization may be occurring...and perhaps serve as a near-real-time mechanism to interrupt it. We remember ENE Alumna Mel Chua, who passed away last month after a long battle with cancer. As a member of our 2011 PhD cohort, Mel was an innovative thinker, creating explanative visuals – often in cartoon form. Purdue recognized Mel as an “Example Maker” for teaching and coaching faculty members across the country in ways to provide their students with real-world, hands-on learning experiences. Mel was a proud member of the deaf community, a vehement advocate for accessibility, and a proponent (see dissertation at https://lnkd.in/gCte-zCb) for “radical transparency” in the research process. Mel pursued life with intensity and joy, and brought these qualities to their final days.
