Lunch Break at Galeya Rogdha School???? School meals are a vital part of improving children’s health and education. Scientific research shows that proper nutrition helps students focus better in class, actively engage with their books, and stay in school. For many children, these meals provide essential nourishment they might not otherwise receive. In 2024, Engera has worked with the Ethiopian Catholic Church to provide daily school meals and regular health checks to ensure students are in the best position to learn and enjoy lessons.??? During our recent visit to Galeya Rogdha School, we saw the progress firsthand. Previously, the children didn’t have access to school meals, which made it difficult for them to concentrate, but now the change is clear. Not only are they enjoying better health, but their energy and engagement in learning has improved. It was also great to see the recently purchased dining tables and benches in use, with all the children enjoying eating together.???????????? The students described the meals as "tasty" and shared how the food has helped them: "I feel big and strong," said one child. "I can pay attention to my teacher more, and I hope the meals continue so I can keep learning," added another student. This simple initiative is having a big impact, showing how programs like these can transform lives. Sustaining school meals is essential to ensure children continue to thrive in both their education and overall well-being. Training midwives, saving lives.???????? Four midwives have successfully completed their critical training program to serve the rural health centers we support in Ethiopia. The life-saving skills in Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) ensure first class medical treatment for mothers and children for years to come. The training was funded in close partnership with the Attat Referal Hospital and made possible through the generous support of the Veta Bailey Charitable Trust. Our goal was to strengthen the capacity of frontline maternal and child healthcare providers serving some of the most resource-limited communities. Over the course of an intensive three week workshop, the midwives gained critical knowledge and hands-on experience in areas such as: - Early newborn care (prematurity, sepsis, hypoglycemia, hypothermia) - Maternal and newborn resuscitation - Management of obstetric emergencies (Ante-Natal and Postnatal hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, obstructed labor) - Assisted delivery The midwives also received specialized training on the use of ultrasound technology which is an essential diagnostic tool that is often inaccessible in rural health facilities. Birhan Chulga, a midwife from the Maganesse Health Center, said, "This training program has been incredibly valuable. It has helped us to revisit and remember important medical knowledge and techniques. I appreciated the practical, hands-on focus of the training." Genet Tesfaye, from the San Marco Health Center added, "The training has been absolutely fantastic. I believe that when I return to my health center, I will be able to be an even better midwife, with enhanced skills and knowledge to better serve my patients." These testimonials highlight the significant impact this training will have on healthcare in the Gurage Zone by strengthening rural midwives' capacity to deliver life-saving care. ?????? Harnessing Solar Energy to Transform Healthcare in Galeya Rogdha As an Ethiopian working with Engera USA, I’m driven by the potential of renewable energy to transform lives. My connection to Galeya Rogdha is deeply personal— I’ve seen firsthand how the unreliable electricity impacts healthcare. This is especially true for the Gumuz community, who are among the most marginalized in the region. Women often endure long journeys to reach the clinic, only to find essential medical equipment unusable due to power outages, forcing many to risk unsafe home births. By harnessing Ethiopia’s abundant sunshine, we can provide Galeya Rogdha Clinic with reliable solar power. This would revolutionize care, enabling accurate diagnostic tests, safe vaccine storage, and consistent lighting, which are crucial for quality treatment. Solar energy would also open up new possibilities through telemedicine, connecting the clinic with urban medical facilities and specialists. With telemedicine support, healthcare workers could consult experts for complex cases, implement better treatment plans, and continuously upgrade their skills—bridging the gap between remote and modern healthcare. The Gumuz community deserves equal access to healthcare, and this project aims to break the cycle of poverty and vulnerability caused by unreliable electricity. ??The total of all donations received by the end of October 31st will be matched, doubling the impact of every contribution! If we reach our target, we can extend the benefits of solar power to another clinic, expanding our efforts to transform healthcare across the region. ?? Your support can help make this vision a reality. Join us in transforming healthcare in Galeya Rogdha. DONATE today and help bring reliable solar power to a community that urgently needs it. https://solarremit.et/ Dr. Eyosiyas Arega, MD #solarpower #sustainablehealth #renewableenergy
