Will these data breaches ever end!! 800,000 people's sensitive information was stolen through a breach at an insurance administrative services company, Landmark Admin. Landmark has partnered with some of the largest insurance companies including Monumental Life Insurance Company, Pellerin Life Insurance Company, and American Benefit Life Insurance Company. This breach happened in May and June 2024 and letters are currently being sent to affected customers. Landmark is offering free identity theft protection services to those affected by the breach. If you get a letter, take advantage of this free service. Helpful tips: 1. Use multi-factor authentication on all accounts 2. Monitor your accounts 3. Put alerts on all of your credit/debit cards so you know every transaction that happens and you can mitigate fraudulent activity. 4. Consider putting a freeze on your credit - this is a good protection tool with fraudulent credit being open in your name and social security number. 5. Not comfortable with a credit freeze, then monitor your credit report on a regular basis. For more details on the breach, read the full Kurt the CyberGuy article

Do you use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or are you thinking about using one? Here is a great article from Kurt the CyberGuy "Can you be tracked when using a VPN" What are some of the reasons you might use a VPN? 1. Websites cannot track you using your real IP address 2. Your internet service provider (ISP) can't track what you are doing on the internet 3. P2P peers cannot track you by your IP address 4. Government cannot track you using your IP address Why would you not want to be tracked, here are some reasons: 1. Privacy concerns 2. Prevent government surveillance 3. Avoid targeted advertising 4. General security Can you be tracked with a VPN? Most VPNs prevent simple ways of tracking by hiding your real IP address. There are some situations where VPNs might not provide complete anonymity. 1. Website tracking can use other tracking methods (e.g. cookies, fingerprinting, web storage, and more) which VPN's can't prevent anonymity. 2. VPN provider tracking knows your real IP address and can see which websites you visit so make sure you use a trusted, reputable VPN provider. 3. Targeted attacks cannot always be protected by VPNs. For instance government using advanced surveillance techniques. Helpful tips. 1. Use trusted, reputable VPN providers 2. Avoid logging into services that can link your activity back to you 3. Use secure browsers 4. Update personal security - use strong passwords, update software, and use any additional security measures the VPN provider has available. For full details and more information read the full Kurt the CyberGuy article including specific VPN providers and their details.

Do you use Google Meet? Scammers are using phishing emails disguised as Google Meet video call invites using URL's that are not for Google Meet. Always looks at the URL and the correct one is meet.google.com. Some of the URL's scammers are using: meet[.]google[.]us-join[.]com meet[.]google[.]web-join[.]com meet[.]googie[.]com-join[.]us meet[.]google[.]cdm-join[.]us If you are in a rush or running late for your Google Meeting, you might click on the link without looking at the URL. If the link is the scammers, you are taken to a fake landing page with a pop up message warning of a technical issue. When you click on "Try Fix" button in the error message, this is where the infection happens on your device. If scammers are infecting Google Meet, you can bet they are infecting (or at least working on it) for Zoom, other web meet applications, pdf readers, etc. Make sure to have a good antivirus software on all your devices that is running all the time and look at the URL before clicking on links. For more information and details, read the full Tom's Guide article.

Please share this information with the #olderadults in you life. As they are being forced to use technology without appropriate instruction, these types of crimes will increase. #smartphones #chpl #mobiletechnology
UPDATE - PLEASE READ! Check out this very important YouTube video from U.S. Secret Service Asst. Special Agent Charles Leopard https://lnkd.in/gC2MzGRm We cannot keep up with the scammers and their techniques. Should you swipe, tap, use chip at ATM or point of sale terminal. Chip and tap are very similar with security measures. Scammers could read your tap if they were standing close to you when you used it. Scammers have figured out how to read your card through your chip or tap method. They can also install malware into the terminal and force the chip and tap not to work which would make you want to swipe your card. It is also hard to tell if a skimmer or shimmer is in the terminal. 1. Please be aware of your surroundings 2. Monitor your credit and debit card transactions 3. Use your credit card - you have more recourse with fraudulent charges on your credit card 4. Debit card can be a gateway into your bank account that is tied to your debit card 5. Consider putting alerts on all your cards so you know when a transaction is made - this is a good way to mitigate fraudulent charges. Be careful out there!
