Driving equitable civic action and social change by working to ensure everyone has access, voice and power in community
关于我们
Engage Winona is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that drives equitable civic action and social change by working to ensure everyone has access, voice, and power in community planning, decision-making and changemaking. Engage Winona’s work begins with inclusive conversations and gatherings, continues with strategies and actions for collaborative change, and throughout involves training and nourishing people with lived experience to be empowered changemakers. We accomplish our mission through a variety of core programs, including hosting conversations and events, convening and guiding groups, providing training and education, connecting people and resources, launching and sustaining ideas, and leading community change in a variety of nimble and deeply collaborative ways that serve individuals, groups and organizations at every step of changemaking. Engage Winona began as a community-wide conversation project in 2016 to envision Winona’s future by bringing the full community to the table. The success of that project led to innumerable ideas and projects to improve Winona – including the idea to create an independent organization to help the community get that good work done. Engage Winona became that organization in early 2017. Today, Engage Winona is a nonprofit that leads social community transformation. Engage Winona is a convener, facilitator, teacher, and project manager working to align and unite resources to maximize community assets, bring and keep cross-sector coalitions in collaboration to work on complex issues, and teach and spread an inclusive process of engagement. All of Engage Winona’s work is open to all.

The day after a fundraising event is always a day for gratitude, and this year is no exception! We are so grateful for the many supporters who joined Engage Winona yesterday evening to enjoy an incredible meal by Blue Heron Coffeehouse and celebrate the power of community. We also want to recognize Miller Ingenuity, Merchants Bank NA, and Gundersen Health System for sponsoring this event. I am truly blown away by the support we receive from our community every day, and especially today! Shoutout to my all-star team Isabel McNally, NDea Young, and Daniel Wilson for their support, and to my amazing board: Erica Ericksen, DNP, RN, Randy Skarlupka, Kevin Mcgree, Alexa Shapiro, Jacqueline Henderson, Laurie Krause, Aurea Osgood, Jay Palmer, and Jackson Ramsland. Plus our event volunteers Adam Muschler and Espoir DelMain. If you're interested in supporting us but couldn't make it to the dinner, this week also marks the beginning of our annual fundraising campaign! Now through December, we hope to raise $8,000 to support our mission. Find out more and make a gift at https://lnkd.in/gYVNyrDE

Great to see this article by Tonya Allen of McKnight Foundation, highlighting the importance of civic spaces to democracy, and spotlighting some of the great organizations tending to shared civic spaces in Minnesota! So many gems in here - this is just one: "The heart of democracy is the people, its pulse is the civic spaces that connect us, and its health requires us to reinvigorate our nation to see and value each other’s worth and dignity, including through our differences, so everyone belongs and can fully participate in keeping our proverbial “house” undivided and collective heart beating." At Engage Winona, we've had the privilege of working with both Art of the Rural and Project Optimist in the past year - their vital work of engaging across differences dovetails with our own, and we're excited to witness the ripple effects of stronger, more interdependent communities.

"The heart of democracy is the people, its pulse is the civic spaces that connect us, and its health requires us to reinvigorate our nation to see and value each other’s worth and dignity, including through our differences, so everyone belongs and can fully participate in keeping our proverbial 'house' undivided and collective heart beating." ???? Hard as I try, I can’t predict what’s going to happen in November. But here's something I know for sure: The future is ours to build—and together, we can make sure the promise of American democracy is fulfilled, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive. This requires, among other things, strengthening our nation’s civic spaces, which are as vast and diverse as the country itself. I’m grateful to brilliant minds like Hahrie Han and Rachel K. who help us understand how to keep pushing forward, and the many McKnight partners who are bringing this reality to life every day. Check out my essay below to read more of my reflections on this pivotal moment in our nation’s history and the history of the world, and why strengthening democracy and our civic spaces should be an every day, every year priority.?

We are thrilled to share that we’ve just wrapped up the second gathering of our Lived Experience Leaders cohort! This incredible group of emerging community leaders is on a transformative nine-month journey together, learning from one another and shaping ideas that will continue to support our community. Through collaboration, mentorship, and shared experiences, they’re building the skills and confidence needed to create community impact. We can't wait to see what this talented and passionate group of changemakers does next - stay tuned for more updates! Many hands contribute to this program, and we want to give a special thank you to the sponsors whose support made this year's cohort possible: McKnight Foundation, United Way of Olmsted County, Target, WNB Financial, N.A., and Walmart!

Let's have another round of applause for NDea Young, the 2024 Rising Star Award winner at the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless Conference! NDea leads our Winona Area Kitchen Table program at Engage Winona and has built her confidence and skills as a program facilitator, public speaker, project manager, and more over the past 18 months. She is a testament to the power of lived experience leadership, and a firm believer that anyone can become a leader with support. Three cheers!!!

Engage Winona staff will present at the upcoming Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless conference in Duluth! Congrats!
So proud of my team! NDea Young and Daniel Wilson are presenting at the #MCHconf about how lived experience can lead the way for affordable housing in greater Minnesota! Rural and small communities need to be part of the conversation about housing, yet often get left out of discussions around community engagement and advocacy work. Three cheers! To learn more about the Kitchen Table program, visit https://lnkd.in/gTYxYd3p. Thanks to Heading Home MN Funders Collaborative for your support of this program!

We were so grateful to spend an evening with a group of Winona community leaders and folks from University of Minnesota Extension and Blandin Foundation to create a Ripple Effect Map of Engage Winona's Lived Experience Leaders program! Over the past 4 years, this program has resulted in dozens of empowered leaders, durable community change efforts, and more. "It made me feel like I was not alone, and I got to build a support system," one graduate shared. The Ripple Effect Map is still being fleshed out, and we look forward to sharing the results when it's finalized!
