In a groundbreaking 22-week program, NWTF used pre-recorded voice call blasts to deliver practical lessons in local languages. These calls provided essential tips on budgeting, saving, and wise spending, helping participants strengthen their businesses without disrupting their daily routines. Results:? - Over 70,000 voice calls were made.? - 75% average answered call rate across 4,014 participants.? - Participants reported improved record-keeping and customer management. When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines in 2013, it highlighted both the transformative potential and the complexities of using digital tools in humanitarian work. Local aid workers, many directly affected by the disaster, played a key role in leveraging new technologies to aid relief efforts. With tools like #SMS alerts and two-way messaging, communities could receive critical information and communicate their needs back to relief organizations—a lifeline amidst the devastation. These efforts showed that technology can bridge gaps in communication and enhance the speed and reach of aid. But Haiyan’s response also surfaced a larger question: How do we ensure that local workers—those at the heart of digital humanitarian work—receive the respect, support, and recognition they deserve? Haiyan’s legacy reminds us that technology in aid isn’t just about efficiency; it’s about centring local knowledge, valuing every voice, and creating a more inclusive response. Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), a global research non-profit, collaborated with engageSPARK to launch an outreach campaign aimed at understanding if better information and incentives could inspire change in water usage. In many low-and-middle-income countries, community health workers (#CHWs) play a vital role in bridging the gap between communities and healthcare facilities. They’ve been instrumental in reducing maternal and child mortality rates, and addressing both communicable and non-communicable diseases. However, progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) has been slow due to the overwhelming burdens on CHWs. They’re often expected to do more without the necessary support or resources. ->? The Solution? Mobile Technology? Mobile technology has the potential to dramatically improve CHWs' productivity and the quality of healthcare they deliver. Here’s how mobile tools can make a difference: 1. Streamlining data collection and reporting? 2. Enabling real-time communication between patients and providers? 3. Improving task organization and supervision? 4. Enhancing monitoring and evaluation processes But, it’s not without challenges. CHWs in #LMICs often face: - Lack of training on new mobile health solutions? - Weak technical support? - Internet connectivity issues What’s Next?? It’s time for health systems to evaluate their readiness for sustainable mobile health (mHealth) solutions.
