year and half ago, a small group of House Republican hard-liners ousted a speaker for the first time in history. His hanging offense: passing a “continuing resolution,” or CR, to fund the government for six weeks. Fast-forward to Tuesday: Not only did many of those same hard-liners back a GOP speaker’s CR — this one for six months, not weeks — but the “hell no” House Freedom Caucus even endorsed the move, with many members voting for a funding extension for the first time.

When?Ryan Zinke?entered the House of Representatives in 2014 as the junior member from Montana, he was something of an anomaly. A three-decade veteran of the U.S. Navy SEALs, Zinke was the first member of the elite special force unit to serve in the House and only the second ever to serve in Congress. His arrival on Capitol Hill became the source of some intrigue among his colleagues, Zinke says: At the time, the SEALs were experiencing an intense period of public celebrity thanks to SEAL Team Six’s role in the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden, which had cemented the public mythology of the SEALs as a lethal band of expert killers. House Republicans are pushing a not-so-clean spending patch through September that would add billions of dollars for deportations, veterans’ health care and the military — and cut $13 billion in funding for non-defense programs. The speaker is planning to put the stopgap, known as a continuing resolution or a CR, on the floor Tuesday, and then send members home for recess before the Senate can send back any changes.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Monday appeared poised to reject an effort to immediately bar Elon Musk and his allies from accessing data or causing firings across a broad swath of the federal government. The judge said an effort by Democrat-led states lacked enough concrete evidence to justify that extraordinary restriction.

A federal judge is allowing the Trump administration to move forward with its plan to downsize the federal workforce by offering employees the option to resign now but stay on the payroll through September. U.S. District Judge George O’Toole, an appointee of Bill Clinton, did not address whether the deferred-resignation program is legal. Instead, the judge ruled Wednesday that several unions that sued over the program lack legal standing to pursue the issue in court.

Senate Budget Chair Lindsey Graham says he’s ready to “fire the starting gun” to turn President Donald Trump’s policy ambitions into law, beginning with a Wednesday committee vote on a fiscal blueprint that would allow Republicans to pass party-line legislation to enact the president’s domestic agenda. It’s all track and field analogies these days on Capitol Hill, where the South Carolina Republican’s panel is pressing ahead with plans to pass two proposals through the budget reconciliation process that will allow the GOP to try to sidestep a filibuster by Democrats. Graham is in competition with House GOP leaders who want to cram the party’s energy, border and tax priorities into one bill. So far he is winning the race against his counterpart, House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington, in terms of speed and support.
