Last week I was viewing power quality monitoring results from a PV solar plant connected on a utility distribution feeder at 23 kV. The plant had been disconnected for over a year due to complaints from a nearby neighbor who was experiencing high-frequency noise (around 6 kHz) on their voltage. I was glad to see that the power plant was back online, producing rated power, and that the original power quality issues were gone. The problem was solved by a moderately sized capacitor bank at the point of connection of the PV plant onto the distribution system. My team at EnerNex studied this case in #PSCAD software, and the simulations proved out the solution to the problem. We also conducted follow-on measurements as proof of concept. This is an example of an emerging concern from inverter-based #DER devices, where the power electronic switching noise can cause issues. Currently, the IEEE standards only address #harmonics up to the 50th harmonic frequency (3 kHz), but the UK Standards now consider harmonics limits up to the 100th harmonic order.
