ESnet is very proud to provide the high-performance network that connects the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science facilities — including National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) Joint Genome Institute Advanced Light Source Advanced Photon Source and Argonne National Laboratory — and thus played a small role in enabling David Baker and his colleagues' 2024 #NobelPrize-winning work.

Chin Guok, ESnet CTO and head of Planning & Innovation, recently gave a SingAREN Tech Talk on "An Introduction to Quantum Networks and the QUANT-NET Project" and also visited the Centre for Quantum Technologies, meeting with #quantumcomputing PI and National University of Singapore Physics Professor Alexander Ling. Now that's #quantumnetworking!

ESnet Executive Director Inder Monga is also the P.I. for #QUANTNET, working with several ESnetters with dual appointments (e.g. Wenji Wu Erhan Saglamyurek Ezra Kissel). The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Trusted CI, the NSF Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, a five-year, $6-million per-year award to run through September 2029. Berkeley Lab will now serve as Trusted CI’s central steward. This award will allow Trusted CI to accommodate its rapidly growing community by supporting regulated research, expanding the Trusted CI Framework, and addressing pressing national cybersecurity workforce development needs with NSF’s support. #NSFfunded For more information, check out this press release: https://bit.ly/4dC5v0t

Congratulations to Kate Petersen M., ESnet Network Engineering Group Lead and ESnet6’s project director, who has just been named project director of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s new High Performance Data Facility (#HPDF)! Led by Jefferson Lab in partnership with Berkeley Lab, this high-profile project will provide the nation’s researchers with the cutting-edge tools, methods, and technologies needed to maximize the scientific value of data. ESnet Executive Director Inder Monga acknowledged that although this is indeed a loss for ESnet, “it is more importantly a huge win for our collective mission: to make large-scale collaborative DOE scientific research easier, more seamless, and data focused. ESnet provides fast and reliable data networking for tens of thousands of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) scientists. ?? But how do we know what they need? ?? We ask them! This week, ESnet’s Science Engagement Team, Executive Director Inder Monga, and staff from across the organization flew to Maryland to meet with a group of scientists who are supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science High Energy Physics Program (HEP) to learn about their plans for the next several years. We spoke with HEP program scientists who are collecting data ranging from ... ??? 408 km above ground, on the International Space Station National Laboratory (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer), to 2km below ground in a mine (SNOLAB) ?? ?? a mountain in Arizona (the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, DESI), to one in Chile (Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, LSST) ?? neutrino experiments at Fermilab that penetrate the Earth’s crust, to myriad physics experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, the most powerful particle accelerator ever built. Scientists from more than a dozen major DOE HEP collaborations (including from Oak Ridge National Laboratory Fermilab SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) Berkeley Lab Argonne National Laboratory) shared with their plans with us for collecting data and connecting with teams of as many as a thousand collaborators to analyze that information. Many need to transfer large volumes of data, often in real time, to data storage and computing facilities around the world. Some studies have already been collecting data for a decade, while others won’t start formal data collection for another couple years. The meeting was part of ESnet's networking #RequirementsReview process, which we conduct with each of the six DOE Office of Science programs every few years. We publish the outcomes from each review in a comprehensive report featuring a dozen-plus case studies, so that the information is available to other DOE SC programs, user facilities, collaborators, and stakeholders to inform planning for cutting-edge science to meet the DOE mission. ?? ESnet was proud to participate in another successful demo of National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) project, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research platform that explores integrating renewables, storage, and interactive loads on a large scale to validate our future #energy system. Using ESnet’s low-jitter OSCARS circuits, the ARIES SuperLab demo connected multiple, diverse physical energy-generating devices (e.g. high-temp electrolyzers, a simulated microgrid, wind turbines, etc) at five national labs — NREL, Sandia National Laboratories, Berkeley Lab, Idaho National Laboratory, and National Energy Technology Laboratory. They then tested three scenarios designed to show how hydrogen/battery and future power storage capabilities can be used to better leverage wind, solar, nuclear and natural gas power assets as part of a more responsive electrical grid. ?? The demo went off without a hitch. The next step toward a more resilient energy future: To expand to include private-sector capabilities and connect a much larger set (thousands) of physical devices!
