?? ? EnergyHub has partnered with Ameren Illinois to launch EV managed charging pilots for residential and commercial customers! These programs aim to deliver grid benefits and broaden access to managed charging across Ameren Illinois’ service territory. By shifting EV charging out of peak demand periods, the programs will reduce grid impacts while ensuring drivers get their desired state of charge each day. When should utilities invest in EV managed charging solutions? According to a recent study from AES and Camus, just 5% EV adoption systemwide is the “tipping point” at which the grid benefits of managed charging start to outweigh the annual costs. These grid benefits are primarily driven by deferring the need for distribution grid upgrades in neighborhoods with the highest rates of EV adoption. Data from EnergyHub’s EV programs supports this finding, revealing that small groups of EVs create much higher load peaks than EVs at the bulk grid level. These localized peaks can put transformers, feeders, and other distribution grid assets at risk of overloading.
