Steam trap management is a critical step in improving energy efficiency, reliability, and safety in steam systems. At Energy West Controls, we work with industry leader, Armstrong International – Intelligent Solutions in Steam, Air and Hot Water to help facilities optimize their steam systems and reduce losses. Great insights from Patricia Provot—let’s not ignore this low-hanging fruit!
???????????? ???????????????????? ?????? ?????????????????? ?????????????????????????? ???????? ?? : ?????? ?????????????? ??????????: ?????????? ???????? ???????????????????? One of the lowest hanging fruits from an energy efficiency , reliability and safety on a steam system is managing the steam trap population and replacing leaking and failed steam traps . Here are some facts and data points : - if the average life span of a steam trap is 10 years that means that every year ????% of the steam traps in a facility ???????? . ( Steam traps have an average of 3 to 15 years life span depending on technology and application . More about that in a later post ). - a facility can have anywhere between 50 steam traps or 30,000 steam traps . - a leaking steam trap can easily lose $5k/year in steam , fuel , water and associated emissions ( the loss will depend on the size of the orifice and the pressure ) - a blocked trap creates significant trouble . It does not remove water from the steam line and could cause water hammer , it also causes wet steam that ends up eroding pipes and creates an ongoing maintenance pain point . - replacing a failed steam trap has a payback time of less than 1 year Despite all these compelling reasons to replace a steam trap , we estimate that only half of the failed steam traps are being replaced in the US . Why ? Because as a generation turns over , the importance of this topic is not well understood anymore . And often the plants do not have the tools and resources to easily test and replace steam traps . This is really a very low hanging fruit that can make a significant impact on your thermal system , let’s not ignore it . https://lnkd.in/ee75kB6E #trapmanagemt #armstronginternational

?? Can Silence Save Your Operations? It did for one wastewater plant! Persistent failures from dual-disc check valves led them to switch to DFT wafer-style axial flow check valves—eliminating water hammer, reducing vibration, and improving reliability. ? Axial Flow – No slamming, no hydraulic shock ? Silent, Non-Slam – Smooth, spring-assisted operation ? Vertical Install – Works in flow-up or flow-down setups Operators were shocked—it was so quiet they had to check if the pumps were running! Energy West Controls proudly represents DFT Inc. - Check & Control Valve Manufacturer and helps facilities optimize performance with the right valve solutions. #Reliability #WaterHammer #Valves #DFT
Can silence save your operations? It did for one wastewater treatment plant. Faced with persistent maintenance and downtime caused by dual-disc check valves, the facility turned to DFT wafer-style axial flow check valves. Why? Because these valves offer a fundamental difference in design: - Axial Flow Movement: Unlike dual-disc valves, which swing open and slam shut, axial flow valves move parallel to the flow path. This eliminates the slamming effect that triggers hydraulic shock. - Silent, Non-Slam Operation: The spring-assisted design ensures smoother transitions, preventing the sudden pressure changes that cause water hammer. - Vertical Installation Compatibility: Axial flow valves operate effectively in vertical flow-up and flow-down configurations, adding flexibility to the system layout. After replacing the old valves, here were the results: - Reduced vibration and noise within the plant - Elimination of flange leaks and valve failures - No more water hammer, even under high-capacity operations Operators noted a remarkable improvement—so quiet, they had to double-check if the pumps were running. The new setup not only resolved water hammer but also enhanced overall efficiency and reliability.
