Townsville is set to play a central role in renewable energy storage with funding for a significant increase in iron flow battery electrolyte production. Through a joint venture between Energy Storage Industries Asia Pacific and Cleveland Bay Chemical Company production will leap from 3 million to 43 million litres per annum. With a total investment of $20 million, supported by a $3 million grant from the Department of State Development and Infrastructure, this expansion will generate up to 50 construction jobs and 20 operational roles, enhancing local manufacturing and the critical minerals supply chain. ?? Thanks to the Queensland Conservation Council for their support of Energy Storage Industries Asia Pacific's grid-scale iron flow batteries, which are non-flammable, non-toxic and recyclable. Following the celebration of the start of construction of ESI’s grid-scale iron flow battery manufacturing plant in Maryborough, Queensland Conservation Council's Stephanie Gray spoke with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio, sharing her enthusiasm for this milestone, hailing it as a significant step forward in clean manufacturing. Media coverage continues after Deputy Premier Cameron Dick, Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders, Fraser Coast Regional Council Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott and #ESIAsiaPacific celebrated the start of construction of our grid-scale iron flow battery manufacturing plant in #Maryborough – an Australian first. As Energy Storage Industries Asia Pacific's Managing Director Stuart Parry told 7NEWS Australia, ESI’s manufacturing, installation and maintenance activities are expected to contribute more than $9.2 billion to Queensland’s economy and create 500 jobs over the next 20 years. “ESI is targeting the delivery of 400 megawatts (MW) of energy storage annually from 2029 – enough to power a new city the size of Toowoomba each year. Importantly, key battery components will be sourced and manufactured throughout regional #Queensland, supporting businesses and creating skilled jobs in local communities,” Mr Parry said. Iron flow batteries can provide electricity for up to 14 hours to power stations, energy retailers and commercial and industrial customers when renewable energy isn’t being generated, such as during the night.
