Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting | Natural Gas, Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS), Nuclear Energy
Governors in some of America’s bluest states just gave the #naturalgas industry a golden opportunity. In a letter to the country’s largest grid operator, PJM, the governors of Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania expressed concerns about rising #energy prices. “Urgent action is needed to prevent customers from paying billions more than is necessary,” the governors wrote. Here’s where natural gas can be a bigger part of the conversation. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, electricity is 3.5 times more expensive than natural gas. Federal data also show homes that heat with natural gas save hundreds if not thousands of dollars each year over homes that rely on electric heat. Any call for more affordable energy will ring hollow if it excludes the most affordable energy option available: natural gas. Yet in many of these same states, regulators and elected officials have been discouraging future investment in natural gas. Earlier this year, Maryland’s governor issued an executive order to get rid of gas furnaces by 2035. In Illinois, the state’s climate law includes a phase out of natural gas-fired power plants unless the CO2 is captured. New Jersey’s legislature has toyed with the idea of banning new natural gas power plants, and the state is actively promoting home #electrification. The conversation is now shifting. A few years ago it was dominated by climate, but increasing concerns about blackouts from the premature shut down of baseload power plants and the associated rising cost of energy show that reliability and affordability are taking priority. The energy delivered by the natural gas system during the winter peak is three times larger than what the electric power system delivers during the summer peak. In addition to lower prices, the direct use of natural gas by homes and businesses means less strain on an already overtaxed grid. In the power sector, the increased use of natural gas has led to a dramatic decline in CO2 emissions since 2005. For those who still prioritize climate issues, promoting more fuel choice can remain a path to continued progress. And let’s be honest, consumers want natural gas. In Washington state and Berkeley, Calif., voters just rejected policies that would have restricted access to natural gas. Over half of all U.S. states now have laws that prohibit natural gas bans. As power prices rise, this isn’t the time for “I told you so.” Gloating won’t lower energy bills. But the pendulum has swung back — and the gas industry now has a unique moment to position itself as part of the long-term solution. https://lnkd.in/exiRAJJm
