Meet Della! Thanks to funding from the William Penn Foundation, ECA was able to hire our first Employer Placement Coordinator to provide additional support to alumni and students, enabling them to access internships, careers, and educational opportunities. Coming to ECA with over two decades of workforce development experience, Della is helping the Knight Green Careers Training Center build relationships with new employers and explore skill building experiences to help our graduates jump start their careers! "On this rainy day, it cleared the air for all of you to rise up and shine," said one family member at today's heat pump technician graduation. Please join us in congratulating these 14 students who spent almost 6 months at the ECA Knight Green Careers Training Center learning about HVAC heat pump technology, building science principles, and home energy efficiency! We had the pleasure of hearing from Amen Brown, 10th District Rep, who shared his story of growing up in West Philly and learning how to do handywork to make money as a young person. It gave him a specific insight into the importance of proper training, the careers able to be had in these fields, and the bright future ahead for our graduates. "I've learned that I represent more than this district, I represent everyone in this room", he stated proudly. It was a great morning honoring the achievements of these young men, who gained nine portable, stackable credentials towards a new career! We had a blast Global Citizen's King Day of Service last week! Not only did we get to party with the Phillie Phanatic and meet Josh Shapiro, but we were also hard at work teaching community members how to make their homes energy efficient. We were even able to get the kids involved in learning about clean energy with the help of our friends at Learn Empower Grow Consulting Group. Global Citizen is hosting their 30th annual King Day of Service at Girard College - join ECA as we work to build the Beloved Community together! On Monday, January 20th, tens of thousands of people from all backgrounds and ages will embrace Dr. King’s legacy of racial and social justice, education, and sustainable citizen action on King Day and beyond. ECA will be hosting Comprehensive Energy Workshops to teach participants about saving money and staying comfortable in their homes this winter. There was not a dry eye in the training center yesterday morning as we celebrated the last graduation of 2024. This cohort of 15 home performance students came to ECA in partnership with Beyond Literacy and earned five construction, energy efficiency, and safety credentials. For four of these students, we also celebrated them achieving their GED, which was an emotional moment for the family and friends who stood by their sides. This is a big step towards a sustainable future for all of these students - they worked hard and lifted each other up to finish this program and set course for careers with family sustaining wages! ? With the increase in automation and prevalence of AI, many people are worried for their job security. Fortunately, the 16 graduates of ECA's pre-apprenticeship program with Connection Training Services (CTS) are now equipped with the skills and credentials to find sustainable careers. As CTS Program Director, Albert Littlepage, put it "there's no machine that can weatherize a house!" ? These dedicated and patient young people stuck with the program, even when they were frustrated or faced obstacles. Now they have three industry credentials and are ready to become gas technicians, work in home improvement, or take a creative path that we haven't even thought of! ECA runs many different programs – from weatherizing and repairing homes, to hosting community workshops that educate our neighbors on energy efficiency, all the way to operating a 58,000 square foot training center for clean energy careers.?But through all this work, runs one clear mission: alleviating energy burden and creating a sustainable future.?Ms. Nicole’s story illustrates how these different threads weave together to not only provide support now, but also create a foundation for future success. Ms. Nicole lives in Powelton Village with her husband and two sons. When they went down to their basement one day to find water everywhere and their water heater damaged, they didn’t know how they were going to afford a new one. Fortunately, ECA’s community programs team works with organizations across Philadelphia, so when Ms. Nicole reached out to them for help, they referred her to us! Who knew learning about home energy efficiency could be so fun?! We've been hosting workshops to teach communities across the city about conserving their heat to stay warm this winter... and having a great?time doing it! ? Workshop attendees learn how to install basic weatherization measures in their homes, like caulking windows or putting in a door sweep. And ECA provides those materials to all attendees for free!
