Congratulations to the Town of Barre and the Town of Dudley for recently being awarded Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs PARC grants for playground renovations! CMRPC staff (Kerrie Carnes Salwa, Greer Jarvis, and Sarah Plutnicki, M.A.) assisted Barre and Dudley with completing their successful applications earlier this year! The TOWN OF BARRE MA (official) was awarded $100,000 to construct a universally accessible playground at High Plains Park. The Town of Dudley MA was awarded $496,650 to construct an active recreation playscape with ten unique areas of play and a pathway with interpretive signage, boulders for climbing, hammocks, and an elevated lookout platform at Richard Carmignani Sr. Park. We are always available to assist our member communities with project development and brainstorming funding opportunities. Happy #NationalEstuariesWeek! Eelgrass is one of the most biodiverse marine habitats, and it plays an important role in buffering our coasts from storms and supporting our blue economy. Learn about our work to study seed-based restoration techniques alongside partners to support this important habitat! #Eelgrass #Biodiversity #ClimateSolutions
Eelgrass is key to keeping our estuaries healthy. Eelgrass is an underwater flowering plant that is vital to the health of the marine ecosystem. Its meadows provide a habitat for fish and shellfish, reduce erosion on our coast, and fight climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide. Salem Sound Coastwatch, MassBays, and the MA Division of Marine Fisheries were awarded a WHOI Sea Grant to investigate if eelgrass habitat can be restored using harvested seeds instead of transplanting whole eelgrass shoots. This experiment is addressing the question are seeds an effective restoration method. Stay tuned for more on this project! #nationalesturairesweek #healthyestuaries #salemsoundcoastwatch #massbaysnep #woodsholeoceanographicinstitution #madivisionofmarinefisheries #eelgrassrestoration

We are celebrating #15YearsOfRiverRestoration by looking back at past DER Priority Projects. This month, we?highlight the Muddy Creek Restoration Project! ?? Muddy Creek is a 55-acre tidal wetland that borders Harwich and Chatham and flows into Pleasant Bay estuary. The wetland had long been disconnected from full tidal flow because of two undersized, deteriorated culverts that decreased water quality, harmed wetland habitats, and caused localized flooding when major storms came through. That all changed in 2012 when DER, the Town of Harwich, the Town of Chatham, and other partners worked to replace those culverts. By 2016, the small, deteriorated culverts were gone, a 94-foot bridge was installed, and the project was officially complete!?Today, tidal flow moves under the bridge daily, kayakers can navigate downstream to Pleasant Bay, water quality has improved, fish are migrating upstream, and habitat and biodiversity have been restored. #NationalEstuariesWeek
