EnerGeo’s members are committed to cleaning up our oceans through the Sustainable Seas Initiative. Since 2016, EnerGeo members have removed 2,975,539 pounds of debris from the ocean. Last year alone members removed 399,380 pounds of trash which is the equivalent of the weight of more than five humpback whales. This ocean debris includes old fishing nets, plastic and more. EnerGeo members have access to information like this and more. To take a look, login to your member portal.

Director, Global Policy - EnerGeo Alliance

A snowy, cold, but very rewarding trip to Brussels and the European Parliament. My sincere thanks to the European Federation of Geologists for the invitation enabling me to attend the very informative ‘Geology for a Safe, Sustainable and Secure Europe’ event on behalf of EnerGeo Alliance. Reflecting on the discussions, it is clear that geoscience has a significant role to play across our energy system, in understanding and mitigating risks from natural disasters, in critical minerals for the evolution of our energy and industrial systems and more. There were differing views among MEPs related to the impact of and challenges presented by EU policies on industries and energy prices for consumers within member states. However, there was common ground on the necessity to facilitate economic growth while balancing environmental protection, and recognition that geology and broader geoscience have a significant contribution to make in achieving that, in collaboration with experts across many other relevant fields. There are challenges to overcome, with geosciences not being taught in many curricula at the early stages, a decline in the number of geoscience graduates and even in course availability, as well as an evident skills gap between what is taught and what is needed within industry. Communication is also key, in order to drive a debate and decisions based on sound science and transparent data. Europe has significant and growing energy and industrial needs. A staggering 90% of natural gas consumed in Europe is imported, with ~12% of that still coming from Russia. The need to avoid over-reliance on external parties in relation to raw materials and critical minerals, and therefore avoid repeating the mistakes related to natural gas was a key take-away, while recognising that international cooperation and supply will also be vital. Geoscience and exploration therefore remain critical to the notion of a safe, sustainable and secure Europe. #energystartshere #makingenergypossible #geoscience #geology

In this article published by Energy News Bulletin,?Nikki Martin highlights the necessity of seismic surveys to identify Australia's energy resources and secure the country's energy future. All reasonable analyses show that Australia must continue developing its natural gas resources to achieve a sustainable energy future, and geoscience surveys play a critical role in this development process.
