Hosted by Bridgewater Associates and Global Citizen, this event brought together heads of state, business leaders and change makers dedicated to Africa’s sustainable growth. At the heart of this vision is the?Abidjan Accord, a groundbreaking agreement signed by global leaders, including Energea’s Co-Founder, Mike Silvestrini. This agreement will drive critical projects, including new solar energy initiatives as part of our Solarize Africa portfolio. ? The past two days, I have been in Abidjan, C?te d’Ivoire, with the Bridgewater Associates team, at the Economic Development Assembly, which we are co-hosting with Global Citizen and Harith General Partners, in support of the The World Bank’s 21st IDA replenishment and its potential impact on Sub-Saharan Africa. We kicked off the Assembly with Nir Bar Dea’s keynote address and over the course of the two days we dove-deep into Bridgewater’s research led by Porter D. and Devon Long. In just 6 months since we announced this initiative, it has been incredible to see so many of my colleagues jump into action. The research team dug deep into the implications of a soon to be realized generational defining demographic boom and its associated economic impact. Through collaboration with many partners and experts, we worked to identify the underlying linkages shaping the future of Africa’s economic development. Together with Global Citizen, we’ve taken these insights to Abidjan and convened key leaders from across the private, public, and civil society sectors—including Mike Silvestrini with Energea who is bringing solar power to Africa, Lawrence H. Summers, Harvard Professor and former U.S. Secretary of Treasury who advised us along the way, and Pawel Swiatek with Moniepoint, who is digitizing Africa’s financial future. The energy and optimism are real. Huge shoutout to our team on the ground and especially CEO Nir Bar Dea, Deputy CEO Porter Diehl, Co-Head of Investment Implementation Devon Long, and Investment Associate Eka Zhao, CFA who presented our findings.?This is what Bridgewater does best, and frankly, this effort brought out the best in us.?To say I am immensely proud of this effort is an incredible understatement. In our Community Solar in Brazil portfolio, solar projects are directly linking thousands of investors with local businesses and residences, creating a symbiotic model where everyone benefits from renewable energy. Once fully constructed, our community solar projects will have about 3,000 investors collectively owning 35 MW of solar power plants across three Brazilian states. Simultaneously, around 3,000 small businesses, condominiums, and large residences purchase the power generated from these projects. This unique model fosters a direct connection between investors and energy users, creating a mutually beneficial ecosystem.
