March Madness is packed with excitement, strategy, and unforgettable moments—but did you know it also holds valuable lessons for presenters? From preparation and audience engagement to energy and creativity, the same factors that make a team successful on the court can make a training session impactful. The way you carry yourself, involve participants, and close out your session can determine whether your message truly sticks. Check out the link in the comments for Brian Washburn's "5 Things Presenters Can Learn from March Madness."

关于我们
We are an award-winning team that is passionate about training, presentations, and communication. One way we express that is by sharing our ideas twice a week on Train Like a Champion. In everything we do, we always come back to the idea that people who present, people who train, people who are responsible for the learning of others should go “all out” when they are preparing. Visit soapboxify.com to see how we're helping all trainers design and deliver better training. Visit the Train Like a Champion blog to see our latest insights.

Some people say "A bad training course is better than no training." Is that true??... No!! When it's time to build a learning experience on a shoestring, the absolute worst thing you can do is open PowerPoint or another presentation software and start creating slides. Being short on money, time, or both doesn't mean that your instructional design needs to suffer.

When our learners return to their jobs and they can do something new or differently or better, we’ve succeeded as trainers. But how exactly can we support our learners once they’ve left the friendly confines of our training room? Perhaps the most common way is through an action plan. As Brian Washburn has done more research on what makes for the most effective action plans, he's found that end-of-training action plans should probably be a little more robust. Most recently, he's moved to a multi-page action plan that participants can actually fill out at several points during a training session, rather than rushing through a generic list of to-dos at the end. We've found this approach not only increases the likelihood of real-world application but also enhances the overall impact of the training program. Give the template a try and see how it helps your participants bridge the gap between learning and lasting change! If you want to know how ruthless you are (or whether you’re a big softy), we have a short quiz you might be interested in. (link in the comments) Why does it matter? With the start of a new year, we tend to have lofty goals in mind. We want to achieve big things, of course, but we likely still have the constraints of time and money that we had last year! That can be an instructional designer’s biggest challenge - how to deliver what a client wants, which is an almost impossible balance of an engaging, informative, entertaining, world-class learning experience on one hand, and taking as little time away from work as possible on the other hand. This means that we need to make some difficult decisions during the analysis and design phases of our work. We have to be …?ruthless.

Is there anything missing from your learning programs? Something - perhaps you can’t put your finger on it - but your gut says that if it were present, you may see even better results from your training programs? Join Brian Washburn next Friday, Dec. 13 at 12:30 EST for a free brief webinar (30 min) sponsored by the Life Sciences Trainers & Educators Network (LTEN). This training is open to the public. Brian will share a variety of theories, practices, tools, and strategies that are part of his periodic table of Elements of Effective Learning.
